GuestHey everybody,
They’re up at:
http://www.iclassics.com/iclassics/album.jsp?selectionId=14840Most of the sound clips are around a minute long, and sound excellent. Can’t think of anything to compare the score to right off the bat. Certain moments evoke memories of DOLORES CLAIBORNE, but it doesn’t have as much in common with that score as, say, EXTREME MEASURES does. RED DRAGON feels like it’s taking place on a large scale, although it does it with subtlty.
The first two tracks are eeriely disturbing with urgent soft strings and deep celli. There’s a melody played softly on bells, remincent of THE FRIGHTENERS or maybe EDWARD SCISSORHANDS. The “Main Title” expands the theme and motifs introduced earlier into a bold and aggressive piece. Pretty friggin cool.
Many of the other tracks are primarily orchestral with the samples fading into the background, allowing breathy flutes and low strings to take center stage. There are a few jolts in there as well, but nothing that I’d call, based on the clips, as “action piece.”
All in all, it looks like this CD is going to be a good one. Let’s keep our fingers crossed!

GuestOkay, from listening to these clips I’m able to extrapolate this…
OUR DANNY’S BACK!!!He hasn’t gone this eerie since Sleepy Hollow!

GuestWith the prepared piano and the reliance on the flute it bares more than a passing resemblance to “A Simple Plan” mix, of course, with Dolores Claiborn!
And the main titles is very Herrmann like in nature – I can hear Hitchcock rising from his grave, no wait that’s just someone at me door. bye.

GuestAMAZING.
Howard Shore’s “Silence of the Lambs” is hinted in some areas (i.e. LOGOS and THE CELL — a bass woodwind riff over a large string piece). This entire score is much darker though and, in a way, much better. Unlike HANNIBAL, this works as a companion piece to it’s signifigant other, LAMBS (as opposed to going off into a completely opposite direction [HANNIBAL]). This does so in part, with eerie romanticism and schizo harp plucks, but stays grounded in it’s main thematics and overall tone.
In terms of his past work
and other past work, here’s
what I’ve noticed listening…01) Dolores Claiborne — Various Sections — Piano and DRY Strings fluctuating with woodwinds in various segments. Best examples would the second half of “Logos” [THE CLIP] aswell as “The Cell” and “Love on a Couch”.
02) Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal — Logos Cue — The dissonant MIDI samples evoke memories of HANNIBAL (That’s pretty much the only time, though). What’s better is The flute riff w/strings. Those bring us memories of SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. It can also be heard in “We’re Different” / in an odd romantic sort of way / and other areas.
03) Tales From The Crypt & Freeway — Titles Cue — From an opening of SAMPLES that sound reminiscent of FREEWAY to a BOMBASTIC MAIN THEME hinting TALES FROM THE CRYPT, this is an amazing cue. The Harp PLUCKS are the highlight.
04) A Simple Plan — Various Sections — The Flute riffs that I associate as a companion piece to SILENCE OF THE LAMBS others may see as a continuation of the vibe present in “A Simple Plan”. We ALL look at this differently.
All These ELEMENTS Come together to make a very menoncholy, eerie and at moments somehow romantic score.Thematically speaking, I could only piece togather two real themes. The Main Theme, over harp plucks and strings, and the love theme, which is softer and can be heard during “logos” on piano and in later sections on piano. Wow. Hopefully the End Credits Suite will elaborate on these themes, aswell as the countless motifs.

GuestI created a MP3 suite from the 16 clips at iClassics.
If anyone wants to hear it go here:http://www.maxrebo.home.dixie-net.com/red.html
I don’t know how long I’ll have it up.
As for the suite itself, there are some pops and scratches
that gives away the RealPlayer sources, but I tried to fix those
the best I could. The order of tracks used in this suite are as follows:
1-2-3(repeated)-5-6-4-7-8-9-12-11-10-15-16-13-14(repeated)-3(short)-
13(short)-5(short)-1(short)*short means that I used just a couple of seconds, and repeated
means that I repeated part of that clip.I hope you all like it.

GuestSweet dude. That’ll hold us until the CD. Thanks.

GuestSome would call it a modern take on SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. I, myself, heard no HANNIBAL influence. I did, though, hear DOLORES CLAIBORNE, FREEWAY and THE CRYPT KEEPER motif.
PS: Two Months and people KNEW that this was going to have a DOLORES CLAIBORNE feel to it. Isn’t that weird?

Glad you like it, I’m always glad to help fellow fans.
I did it just to tie me over until the CD so anyone else it helps is a plus.

It ALSO had some Kilar’s “Dracula” influence, too.

I was just waiting to see who would be the one to say that LOLSeptember 21, 2002 at 8:34 pm #42197Anonymous
GuestEspecially the track, “We’re Different”. . .

GuestI think it’s simply smashing, which is good, as it restores my faith in the man after MIIB. (Not a bad score, but not one that I was apt to play more than twice, and then put it onto my shelf to gather dust…yes, chastise me if you must).
-E (who has been listening to “Tempered Steel” and “American Elegy” by Frank Ticheli almost incessantly this day – hooray for wind band lit!)

GuestIts bloody brilliant.
Maybe I was just in a fragile state of mind, but I listened to these damn clips and I got scared. And I’m 28 – I’m a big boy – but it’s creepy. Especially for those of us who have read the book, and know how disturbing it is.
Thomas Harris has this great and unnerving ability of making you understand the killers in his books, to the point where (heaven forbid) you suddenly realize a lot more people are capable of acts of monstrousity than you think.
Well – thats what I think (suddenly looks around all nervous).
Guys? Talk to me…
Bloody brilliant music. Awesome strings in the main titles. It’ll be a cracker.
Toby.

GuestHmmm…? Confused about this one. Don’t worry, I’ll just give it time. It always works.
