Participant1). Elfman in a fairly recent interview said something to the effect that Chris Young was basically brought in because he argued with Raimi over a cue that Raimi wanted to sound like Hellraiser, and Elfman said “if you want it to sound like Chris Young, go get fucking Chris Young”. Which cue was this? Was this the cue that was used when Ock was getting his tenticles?
2). The cue that is used during the scene where Pete is seeing his Uncle in a vision of some sort (prior to leading into the cue that was reused from the end of Final Confrontation from Spider-Man 1 and prior to the scene where he throws the suit in the trash in Spider-Man 2)… was this Elfman’s work?
3). I noticed Steve Bartek did some work on the movie’s score. Was this in harmony with Elfman’s work, or was he asked after Elfman left? Did this cause a rift between the two of any kind. that anyone was aware of?
4). Has Sam Raimi made any comments yet on either what Danny has said since the post Spider-Man 2 interviews, or with regards to the movies’ score in general?
5). Who did the train sequence? I thought for a long time it was Chris Young… but I suppose I was misled by his name popping up in the first place.
Just a few questions I was wondering about… if anyone has any answers, I’d be interested to know. Thanks!

Participant1. Yeah, the Hellraiser theme was almost exactly copied by Chris Young because the actual cue couldn’t get licensed. What a business when you can’t use your own creations! Also what a business where you can hire one of Hollywood’s top composers for the most expensive movie EVER and still want to use licensed music.
2. Pretty sure Elfman did that cue, because it’s used when he talks about what parts to score first on the DVD feature.
3. Ryan?
4. Interesting question, but I’ve heard nothing from Raimi’s side. Probably trying not to recognize that there actually was a problem.
5. It was Chris Young.
Ryan would probably know the rest because I think there’s still more information he’s hiding from us. I also sent an e-mail question to Dan Goldwasser at SoundTrack.Net about his recorded music getting replaced by old music, and hopefully it will be answered on their next Podcast.

ParticipantI read an interview (I think it was in Cinefonia but I’m not sure) where Danny said that Bartek left with him. Rumours of Bartek working on the film’s score on his own seem to be false…

ParticipantI have to wonder how all this will play out. I mean, Raimi is obviously attached to the main themes why else would he become so attached to the temp tracks. So from that standpoint I can’t see this going the Batman Forever route where the themes completely change with a new composer, but if Chris Young is asked to copy Elfman and use variations on Elfman’s themes how is he going to feel about that I wonder.
If it gets halfway in and doesn’t sound like Elfman and Raimi is unhappy with it is Chris Young going to say, “you want it to sound like Elfman, so go f***ing hire Danny Elfman” and walk out. I think Sam has backed himself into the corner if he loves the original score but screwed Elfman over. I can definitely see a scenario where Sam realizes his error and tries to patch things up with Danny but it might be too late…..

KeymasterAs far as I know Steve Bartek never wrote any music for SPIDER-MAN 2. That was an old piece of misinformation that also had Joseph LoDuca writing material for the film too.

ParticipantYeah, Elfman said that they _tried_ to get Steve to come in and do the arrangements, but that he declined.

ParticipantHere goes…
1) The cue Danny is referring to could be one of four cues, all composed for the Doc Ock Demonstration Sequence. These are: “The Reveal,” “Blue Light,” “Fusion,” and “Mayhem,” as they were revealed in the complete cue list on the DVD. All of these cues were cut out and re-scored by Christopher Young, with no attempt made to intercut with Elfman’s original material. Some of this music cannot be heard in any form, but some of it IS on the DVD documentaries and menus.
2) Yes, and it was entitled, “Uncle Ben.” The last thirty seconds were cut out and tracked with a section of “Final Confrontation.” The original final 30 seconds is also on the DVD and sounds remarkably similar. My guess is that the scene was one of the “late edit” victims, and the filmmakers decided to track something in that sounded close enough to Elfman’s original music, but fit the scene.
3) Bartek never composed additional material for the film. He and Danny (to my knowledge) still remain fine.
4) Nope, and I’m curious as to what he has to say as well.
5) Christopher Young did indeed score the train sequence. Another tid-bit: Young’s train music was tracked into two other areas of the film as well: During the Bank fight and during the Pier sequence. Again, probably “late edit” victims.
Hope this helps!

Laughing my ass off.
Maybe the Spider-Man 3 score will be all stock music and credited to a fake shemp!

ParticipantThanks for the great answers everyone…. they’re much appreciated. I’m fairly certain that Chris Young won’t be back for Spider-Man 3, seeing as he didn’t really provide overall what Raimi wanted. My hopes are that Raimi somehow appeases Danny… although I don’t see that happening. Don’t really know what direction I want them to go with after that.
I really don’t want any nobody come in and try to sample Danny’s work. I was talking with my wife who I’m trying to get to understand about composed music… and even she recognized that the main theme applied to Spider-Man is just a collection of three primary notes that are under the fingers of a puppet-master. Anyone else would do his work a disservice.
Not having Danny is a problem for Raimi.

ParticipantSeriously, as bitter as Danny sounds, I still hold the hope in my heart that Raimi does such a thing that makes Danny return and patch their relationship.

KeymasterWell it took Elfman and Burton four years to reconcile their differences in time for MARS ATTACKS! Did I ever tell you all the story behind that? It’s fascinating, and totally Burton!

ParticipantWe’ve heard bits and pieces about the story from Danny himself, but is there something you know additionally! You tempt us so, Ryan!

ParticipantI’m with you, Danny Burton…. but as time goes by, I’m guessing that’s all a pipe dream.
Ryan — please let us know!!
