GuestI have always been extremly interested in Danny’s use of choirs. While on certain films he used a tried and true method (like Batman’s Decent into Darkness), some where just so odd and out there that it really got my attention (Freeway, Mars Attacks!). I also admit that I am a HUGE fan of choral choirs. Anyways, onto the question:
How many of you really like the strange melodic things that Danny does in his music? For instance, there is a certain part in the main title sequence of Mars Attacks! (on the CD, you can’t really hear it in the film), where he has a female voice just going crazy (big interval slurs) [Main Titles – 1:33]. Now while this may not be the most ear pleasing thing to hear, I thought it was awesome. Freeway does this alittle bit too [Main Titles – 0:40]. On Black Beauty he does something similar to that effect, but with woodwinds [Ginger Snaps – 1:39]. I just love these odd little things. One more example off these odditys is in Edward Scissorhoands (Danny Elfman points it out in his commentary). When all the men leave for thier jobs, there is an unexpected loud burst of suspencful music [Ballet De Suburbia – 0:47]. I think these little odd things are part of what makes Elfman’s music Elfman’s music. So, anyone else like these strange little quirps?Knight (If you know of more, please post ’em!)

GuestI REALLY REALLY like all Danny Elfman choirs. The choirs on EDWARD SCISSORHANDS make the score to a really GREAT score. By the way: EDWARD SCISSORHANDS is one of my top scores by Danny Elfman. But what about the GOOD WILL HUNTING choirs in the Main Title of it??? They’re just wonderful.
Hey what do you think about David Newman’s use of choirs??? I think he also uses wonderful choirs!!! Just listen to the ICE AGE score and you will say: WOW!!!

GuestI think more choir parts would have greatly enhanced the Red Dragon soundtrack. I really liked the track where a choir was included.

GuestI really love those stacatto choir parts in the beetlejuice theme. Very spooky and mysterious.

GuestUwus: Nice! Now I can listen to more music! [Goes and runs to the CD store]
Matt: I think that the Red Dragon soundtrack was perfect in every way. For strange things (which is what this post is for), I really loved those shrieking strings in it. They where so….freaky!
Elfmanfreak: Can you give me a track and time so I can pin it? I don’t remeber hearing that…
Knight (Who wonders how many other people here love Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana [oh, and Nat, if you read this, I really liked William’s Duel of the Fates. Yes, that’s right, I liked something he did hehehe])

GuestThere’s this one track in the Spiderman soundtrack (don’t remember which on it is) that has this beautiful choir part. It’s in the middle of the track. I’m sure most of you know what I’m talking about. It’s awsome!

GuestGinger snaps. Parade Attack. And, the best choral parts, imo, come from Sleepy Hollow. Kind of surprised nobody mentioned that one yet…
I love dissonance as much as I love coffee…which is saying quite a lot, considering that I need both coffee and music to live…-E

GuestSLEEPY HOLLOW!!!!! How can I forget!? Oh my godley! That soundtrack has some of THE sweetest choir parts I’ve ever heard. The 6th track has to be one of my favorite Elfman pieces, if not THE favorite, of all the soundtracks I’ve heard.

GuestFirst Of all: I don’t want to promote that score!
Knight: Listen to it. That piece of music by David Newman has a great choir!

GuestHey that’s true SH is really great. I think that Sleepy is a hell of a movie and the score just fit so goon into it that…man, ohhhh uuuuhhh
Even a friend of mine, who is not a fan of scores, loves it.Well that be all.

GuestWell, I’m a big fan of the Nightbreed score!
I especially like how all the tribal percussions and such play off the chorus. I mean, drums are pretty well-grounded. More earth-like, I suppose. And then, you’ve got all these voices floating around, playing off the drums, and they’re very light–almost delicate.
And, you’d think all the percussion would drown out the chorus, or that the chorus would over-power the drums, what with each having such a definite presence and all–but they don’t. I mean, neither one is over- and/or under-used–they just fit, you know?
And it’s so snazzy how the children’s chorus and the adult chorus just sort of bounce and blend into one another, you dig? The interaction between the two groups is just saucy, in and of itself!
Then again, I know nothing about music. And I could have a penchant for percussion–just because I like to hit things….
(I also like the obscure bits of chorus in the To Die for Score–just because it always cracks me up)!
