GuestI sent this message to iclassics…
“Can somebody please give us a description of the RED DRAGON score (or some sound clips) sometime soon? The DANNY ELFMAN fanboys are getting restless.”
…and here’s what they sent me…“Hello, I will have audio clips up Thursday evening. I will try and get more information for you. The score is in my opinion, one of Elfman’s best!”

GuestNice work Mikey…
…after I wrote to Decca and found out that there would be no dialogue on the CD, and now this, I don’t know why we don’t go right to the sources more often – it takes just writing a simple email!
Again, Mikey, way to go!

GuestHm, but what KIND of “Elfman’s best” are we going to get? Is it going to be like “Sleepy Hollow” best, or more along the lines of Spidey? (I’d expect more of a SH-type score, but then again…)
-E (who wants to be pleasantly surprised by the Red Dragon score)

GuestOh I think we’ll be surprised enough.

GuestI hope the thing will be a mix betwen Sllepy Hollow and Black beauty. Nice mix, ah?

GuestI think it’ll be a romantic Delores Claiborne/Sleepy Hollow mix. How ’bout that?

GuestYeah, I’m looking forward to a lot of Wagner influence in Dragon…
-E (who is beginning to like Al Reed’s music a bit more…she’s even beginning to find the schmaltzy, overly cheesy stuff enjoyable…then again, that may be because her college band director beat it into her head…)

GuestIf your getting into Alfred Reed, then please try “Russian Christmas Music” and “Otello” (In multiple movements) – our high school band played both of those in competition, and I really enjoyed it. I also liked his “Armenian Dances”, but that is a little more on the “overly cheesy stuff”. You a making me get our my Alfred Reed CDs, I hope your happy!

Nat who loves band music written for band, but who usually cringes as poorly made arrangements of film scores for band (and I’ve play plenty in my time).

GuestAudio Clips of RED DRAGON — up on Thursday
. . . so. . . where are they?
September 20, 2002 at 2:38 am #42171Anonymous
GuestWhere is iClassics based, if it’s the West Coast then there is still plenty of Thursday left (giving them the benefit of the doubt)… Actually just over 4 hours of Thursday left right now (ok then, not plenty, but there is time.

GuestNat – Yup, played “Russian Christmas Music;” “Othello” as well. Hey, my favorite Reed work is “Armenian Dances.” Very Khatchaturian, no? Ever done “Springtime celebration?” Man, that’s cheesiness beyond compare, but yes, it DOES grow on you…eventually…sometimes after a lot of coffee and a great first date…but you really DO start to enjoy the schmaltzy cheesiness. Actually, played it while Al Reed conducted…kinda cool
He’s in the process of writing a new Shakesperian piece (tenatively titled, “Midsummer Night’s Dream”) for my old college band, which SHOULD be premiered in March or so…but you never know, the guy’s getting up there in years
I’ve been invited back to play, but since my wonderful college director is now gone (he was great friends with Al), I’m not sure if I want to…I’m too afraid the “magic” will be gone.-E (who is glad that she irritated Nat enough to get out his Al Reed CDs
*Her* favorite wind band composer is a toss-up between Rolf Rudin and Johan De Meij…she loves wind band music more than anything, including coffee, chocolate, her dog, actual dates and yes, even Danny’s music *ooh, heresy!* And now, she will satisfy the overwhelming compulsion to put on Rudin’s “Dreams of Oenghus”…)September 20, 2002 at 2:51 am #42173Anonymous
GuestWell, I still have 4 hours of Thursday left.

GuestErika, my favorite band composer is David Holsinger – his Liturgical Dances is one of the most challenging (and rewarding) experiences I’ve had in band. And I got to be conducted by him (so there
).Let me thank you again for introducing me to Rudin’s “Dreams of Oenghus”. It’s always nice to share a passion – especially for music.
I want to hear a score written for a standard wind band – I think the closest full score is one by Herrmann (but the name escapes me) – actually wasn’t “Journey to the Center of the Earth” devoid of high strings [that’s pretty close when you consider that some band scores actually call for a Double Bass (I have a few Reed scores that do)]. That was a mouth full!

Less than 2 hours and waiting!

GuestI hate the score is I’m-deliciously-having-fun-eating-people-because-I-can-get-away with-it-fun. But hopefully it’ll be more serious than not.
I mean, it could just be me, but I think the sequel to Silence of the Lambs got kinda cheesy–especially at the end (although I did get a good laugh; and you’ve gotta love Hannibal’s influence on the young).
So, I’m hoping this movie is darker and more serious–closer to the first one than not (even though, in theory, I suppose this is the “first” movie). And I’d like to see what Danny can do with an exceptionally dark picture, besides.
