KeymasterAnyone see the Benadryl (allergy medicine) ad currently airing on US Network TV? I just saw it during AMERICAN IDOL (no comments!) and the music completely rips off Danny’s DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES theme. Wow!

Sorry man, I have to comment… Karaoke sucks, and people that are so desparate for fame that they’ll participate in an internationally-televised karaoke contest also suck.
People that watch it, however, don’t suck. They’ve just got lousy taste in TV. Winky smiley face!

KeymasterWell, I see your point, but the realities of the music business is that actual talent is never the major factor in launching a music career, instead, it’s opportunity. For thousands of talented vocalists in the United States who do not live in major urban centers or access to record labels A&R people, American Idol represents a truly legitimate shot at showcasing ability.
The entertainment industry is dictated by the tastes of a few, rife with nepotism and favors. American Idol cuts all of that crap out of the process. No one, regardless of financial, ethnic or religious background can make their way through the competition without earning their way or appealing to the masses. For once it doesn’t matter that your Dad is a lawyer for the head of a music label. The fact that you are a talent-free asswipe doesn’t apply to people whose families get them into the business. Now, a nobody can walk off the street, sing and actually get somewhere. That’s pretty goddamned cool if you ask me.

InactiveFair enough. I wasn’t really trying to start an argument, just poking fun at you…
I agree that this is a new, somewhat cool, method of showcasing your talent, but as I said in my original post, it seems to me that the motivation behind all these people auditioning for this show is fame, not musical expression, and I don’t think that’s cool. There are too many musicians/singers out there that really, genuinely care about making art to worry about people that just want to be stars, in my opinion.

ParticipantWell, they want to be entertainers, most of all. THEN, possibly, artists. There’s a fine line between one and the other, but there is a line, dividing where the stress goes.
It’s a good way to showcase young, unknown, taleneted entertainers, possibly. I have a major problem with the criteria these people are judged upon, but these are market criteria. So, it’s not enough that they show they can sing very well, they have to prove themselves ‘marketable’ to a larger audience. It’s not called “Idol” for nothing, right? I sort-of-kind-of detest that, personally, but everyone there knows what they’re bargaining for, so I think it’s a fair deal.April 23, 2006 at 9:16 am #56942admin
