GuestWell I’ve watched Cabin Boy again, this time on DVD, and for the first time in Widescreen format. It’s been a couple of years since I caught it on cable, and I have to admit that I like Chris Elliot and his brand of “bad humor” creating something humorous. I love “Get A Life” too – his short-lived TV show that has already seen one volume on DVD. As for Cabin Boy, I find it Entertaining in a Irwin Allen, Ray Harryhausen type of way. I wonder how Burton came to be attached to this project (which he co-produced with Denise Di Novi from TNBC and JATGP I think). Whatever the connection, I think he might have something to do with getting Steve Bartek the scoring gig. The score itself sounds like Elfman, which Bartek was probably asked to do. On top of that there is another Elfman connection in the score – the use of the song Beautiful Dreamer which Danny used in Batman. I find the movie a fun romp that is best when you get to hear the banter of the “salty seamen”. The transfer is uneven, it’s not remastered and occasional specks occur in the film. The sound is only presented in Dolby Digital, and there are absolutely no extras (not even a trailer), but the price, $9.99 is well worth it, if you like the film. My favorite scene is the infamous David Letterman scene… “Want to by a monkey?” I was asking people that, months after seeing the film for the first time. The rest of the cast, that includes Andy Richter, Brian Doyle-Murray, James Gammon, Brion James (who usually plays token bad guys), Ricki Lake as the ships maidenhead, and old film and soap opera star Russ Tamblyn as Chocki are all perfectly insane.
What does everyone else on here think of this movie? Or am I the only one who is touched in the head? – Please answer the first question first.
Nat who love bad movies that revel in their badness.
“Catinka, cawinka, calinka, you know what that means… yes you do?”

GuestSteve Bartek should be allowed to score more movies.

GuestThat’s great, Dobbs…
I haven’t seen “Cabin Boy,” but I do like to watch “bad movies that revel in their badness”…like Ed Wood’s flicks and Metropolis (I love watching old silent films where you can tell that the men are wearing more makeup than the women…a description: an earlier 1984, again, with a hilarious pseudo-score…) And the worst “horror” movie of all time? *drum roll, stopping abruptly as the musician is bludgeoned to death with a 10-lb. bag of jawbreakers*: The Black Cat…dear god, that’s hilarious! It’s just so…bad…the score isn’t even a “score,” just the same basic tune playing over and over again on synths…it’s a trip, that’s for sure (wow, wasn’t that descriptive?)

Guest>>Ricki Lake as the ships maidenhead
Err . . either you mean something different, or else this is an unusually pervy and bizarre movie . . .

Guest“Err . . either you mean something different, or else this is an unusually pervy and bizarre movie . . .”
LOL, Oh I’m sorry, it was the bowhead, my slip up of maidenhead (where was my mind at the time?) is really funny when you consider the name of the ship “The Filthy Whore” – is that pervy and bizarre enough for you?
LOL even louder.
Nat who is know to make mistakes from time to time, but this one was pretty funny (at least to me)

Guestum…lemme guess: You like Rosemary’s baby? If that’s the case, I apologize for my impolite statement, but nevertheless, do not share your sentiments (if, in fact, you DO like that film)…

GuestActually don’t like Roman Polanski movies very much…he seems like he’s on the run from the law, or so i heard.

GuestI admire most of polanski’s films, and rosemary’s baby is considered as one of his best (and a classic). I really look forward to see The Pianist, his lastest film, Palme d’or in Cannes 2002.
But, you know, I can understand that his style doesn’t match your feelings.September 9, 2002 at 7:00 pm #41971Anonymous
Guestmellow44, isn’t The Pianist scored by Kilar? If so I’m really looking forward to the score.

Guestyes. It is one of the reason i can’t wait to see the film (the score for the 9th Gate was amazing).

GuestIf you like the score for the 9th Gate then I’d have to recommend listening to some of Michael Nyman’s work. If you already do, I’m sorry I brought it up, it’s just that’s who the 9th Gate score made me think of. And there is even a cue that similar to Elmer Bernstein’s Ghostbusters (go figure)!

GuestI also enjoyed the score to the 9th gate. The movie was okay, but the score WAS quite nice! Have to look for “The Pianist” when it comes out (not yet released, I’m assuming)…
