GuestYAY! Can’t wait for Jan 14, now!
Saw the movie last week and it was fantastic, btw!January 11, 2003 at 9:40 am #43703Anonymous
GuestI’ve seen the CD, but I can’t buy it yet. I might be getting it a day before the release date however. Does anyone know how much time those 2 tracks are? Oh well, it really doesn’t matter, I’ll be getting it anyway – still, I’d like to know up front.
Nat who bought the Anywhere But Here CD knowing that it only contained one Elfman track (and a co-written song) – what a great track that was!

Guest“I’ve seen the CD, but I can’t buy it yet.”
You’ve seen the Chicago soundtrack in stores?
I thought the soundtrack doesn’t come out until Tuesday.

GuestOnly two tracks, eh? Well, close to $20 for a CD containing even a bit of Elfman’s magic is a small price to pay for absolute bliss

-E (who just now figured out that she’s using a “Canadianism” – probably incorrectly – and yet she’s a US citizen. Well, now, as we might begin to wonder -here in the land of “fuzzy math” and “making the pie higher” – “is our children learning?”)

GuestSorry; couldn’t resist the intentional grammatical errors and dig at Shrub. I know this has been discussed before, but I still think he’d be 99% cooler in my eyes if he listened to Elfman…
-E (I think I passed the level of ultimate geekiness when I sat down with a pen and notebook, and wrote down all of Bush’s grammatical errors in the “Axis of Evil” address. Actually, maybe that “passing of ultimate geekiness” occured when, for extra credit on daily quiz, I had the students diagram an Elfman quotation off of one of his AOL chat/interviews…)

GuestI HAVE THE CD!
Oh Mamma! This is a HOT one indeed!
The only other works by Elfman I would even compare this to would be the “Oogie Boogie” song, his Cab Calloway material for Forbidden Zone, and some music in Dick Tracy. I can only hope that this leads to a score where he can show this type of writing off in abundance. Anyone speaking about Elfman’s scores all sounding alike will be shut up with his work here. In tone it reminded me more of other composers than the big E himself – the historical influences are obvious, but I was surprised by the freshness in the jazz-styled music of Wynton Marsalis or Randy Newman.
The two tracks represent about 7:30 on the time scale (about half of what Elfman wrote, if we can believe the reports this time
, and I’m glad to have all 7 minutes and 30 seconds of it.Nat who is now fully in his jazz mode, after being in his Franz Liszt state of mind last night.
P.S. and the rest of the CD is OK too (the sound quality is really great)… Except for the Hip-Hop stuff

Good Night to All…

GuestAlso, after listening to it a couple of times, I really love the reference to James P. Johnson’s “Charleston” in the Roxie’s Suite track.
If you like these Elfman tracks as much as I do, then I recommend the CD Victory Stride – Symphonic Music of James P. Johnson
Nat who is way past his wake time

As for sound clips, I might put some up tomorrow if I’ve got the time.

GuestComes out on Tuesday, right? Hooray! I get paid tomorrow, so I’ll have a few bucks to burn – enough for Elfman, anyway

-E (yes, I do like to corrupt my students – but only through the wholly legal measures of promoting Elfman/Boingo, film scores, Nabokov and organic foods consumption. 48 hours of no sleep is beginning to take its toll on me…I’ve been kept awake for the past 2 nights by Philip Glass, Rolf Rudin, and the horrific fish-people in the Tiawanese production of HP Lovecraft’s “Dagon.” Gotta love those “English subtitles” which are actually en Espanol *grins*)
