i read a review in hotdog, an entertainment mag in ireland, of mib 2 and minority report. i cant remember exactly word for word what it was but this was it generally….. ‘ danny elfman has written a great score. problem is he’s used it in about a dozen other films: batman, spiderman, sleepy hollow and beetlejuice’! after reading this i glanced over the page to find a review of minority report which states that ‘john williams is still the king of original scoring’!! this reviewer knows nothing. 1) batman, sleepy hollow and mib2 are COMPLETELY different styles of danny, never mind the fact that he is probably one of the most, if not the most, experimental and original sounding composers around. and 2) johns williams has not changed his style in about 20 years…so he hasnt been the king of original scoring in a long time. even try humming indianna jones, star wars and superman straight after each other…they sound exactly the same.

Yeah, I think “ORIGINAL scoring” was the wrong term for Williams. Exciting, melodic, and memorable themes, perhaps…but they DO all follow an unoriginal orchestrating pattern.

I WILL say that A.I. was a step away from his traditional sounds. There were things in there that, if I had not known, I would never have guessed Williams was responsible for.

The whole bit about Elfman using the same material from all his other movies for MIB 2 is utterly incomprehensible. If they had compared Batman and Spiderman, or Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure and Back to School, I would have understood. But MIB 2 is in his pop/punk/groovy sphere, in which Batman and Beetlejuice never set foot. Weirdness.

Well, that’s the Irish for you.

I really do not see why people have such a boner for Williams *sigh*, but you know, I can say with out a doubt in my mind that even Batman and Batman Returns, or Men in Black or Men in Black II, do not sound alike. Yes, they share a couple themes, but there is a ton of new ones, a new style, and an overall different feel to each score.
I can’t even understand why anyone would say Spider-Man and Batman sound anything alike. I can listen to them right after each other (the soundtracks that is), and not get tired of them, which I would if they were alike. The only thing that IS there is Elfman’s style, which sometimes can only be identified by the uniqueness of the sound, but also the rather (pardon the word) “Dark” tonality contained in all his scores.
This is why I like his stuff so much, more than any other modern compser, because his stuff changes all the time, there is always something new. The BAD thing about critics is that most of them spent an extensive time in schools learning how music (in any genre) SHOULD be, although there is no specifics on that. Because of the fact that Elfman has little musical training helps the fact that he breaks out of those boundrys, and creates something new. To a listener, this is great. To the educated, this is terrible. Just look at how many people like rap! :D
