GuestHi folks,
In one or two Danny Elfman interviws I came across, I read that Danny didn’t really liked, and even almost disowned the song “Weird Science”. For example, he refused to sing it during the Farewell concert.
Is there any particular story around “Weird Science” ? To me it’s a enjoyable, inventive song with a joyful wackiness to it. All I know about it is its use in both the John Hughes film, and the lame series that spawned a few years later. At first, I don’t understand why would Danny reject it…

GuestYeah, I’ve heard that too. In fact, I don’t think danny rejects that song. It’s just that he has played it so many times, that he almost hated it for a while.
And well, we all know what Danny loves : EVOLUTION !!! So, beeing stucked and remembered for one top seller song is not what he likes the best…Eric

Guest… Plus the fact that it was used in a horrid movie.

GuestDanny hates repeating himself; he’s said so in a number of interviews. WS being the band’s best known song, it would mean he had to sing it countless times. That being said, it only makes sense that he would begin to resent it over time, regardless of whether it’s a good song or not.
I personally think that WS is a wonderful song, but it isn’t one of their best. Honestly, I get a little annoyed that most people only know them for that, or DMP, which in fact is probably one of my favorites. Still, when some one says to me “oh, yeah, they did Weird Science, right?”, I can’t help but feel a tad irriatated because they have NO CLUE. WS is great, but if there’s one song that defines Boingo- which I don’t think there is just one- that would not be it.June 14, 2003 at 4:01 am #45489Anonymous
GuestWell, I can’t speak for Danny….but I know I’ve wrote some crap that I thought was snazzy at the time. And then, a few years or so you just look back….and cringe!
You know, the whole “….and it kills my brain to think of all the stupid things I’ve said/and if I could change the future I would change the past instead….” bit. I imagine it happens to everyone at some point in time.

GuestI always thought maybe it had to do with the song’s purpose or origins. Boingo was music that Danny wrote for himself/the band. Weird Science was a hired thing. You’ll notice you don’t hear them doing the themes to Bachelor Party or Fast Times (tv) in any of their live shows.
Songs like Something Isn’t Right, Goodbye-Goodbye, No One Lives Forever (this list could go on forever) were Boingo songs (or even Mystic Knights songs) before they were movie songs so they’re just fine.
I’m not sure what this theory of mine means for Try to Believe. Maybe it’s the exception that proves the theory. Or maybe it’s because it’s a really good song, much better than WS. But then again, it pretty much only got played during the tour to support that album.
It’s a shame that red head doesn’t ever pop in to answer some of the question like these which only he can answer.

GuestHow do you know he hasn’t?

Guestoh don’t start that “how do you know he hasn’t” business. It’s bad enough that around Danny’s birthday there were about five people claiming to be so…
I can’t recall Ryan giving any info. as to if Danny ever comes here; I’m tickled enough that Richard pops in sometimes.
as for the birthday thing… haha to whoever put their email down as IamDannyElfman@noreallyIam.com or something like that, I can’t exactly remember.
sigh…crazy people… Jo Elfgirl

GuestI have to believe that around the time “Dark at the End of the Tunnel” came out, film music predominated Elfman’s career. “Try To Believe” is really the main theme of “Midnight Run” with lyrics added, so Boingo co-opted a score song. Previously, songs were written by the band for the band and then licensed for film use afterward.
This is the weird world a rock music turned score composer invents for himself, as I’ve heard Hans Zimmer say the same things in interviews (though The Buggles was primarily Geoff Downes and Trevor Horn). Michael Kamen still floats in and out of the mix (noting his many collaborations with bands) although his rock collaborations with Mark Frost were early in his career.
Other than that, yeah. What he said.
