I really need the help of the kind people on this message board!

I’m trying to find sources for an important paper I have to write. It’s very hard to find sources on Danny Elfman stuff. Here’s what I still need:

    1) two types of secondary sources. one a criticism of Danny from early in his career. You know, something about how he doesn’t have formal training. And then just any other secondary source. All I can find are interviews and not much more. is there anything else out there?

    2) scores! why aren’t there any real scores out there? why are there no orchestra arangements for the Batman or Beetlejuice themes? I think I’ll settle for the band arrangement of Batman, but that’s not as good.

If anyone could help me out here, I’d greatly appreciate it. You would be my new hero/heroine!

Just curious . . . I’ve never heard the band arrangement of Batman but know there’s one out there, and that it’s something like a grade 2 1/2 or 3. Do you have any recordings of it??

I don’t, but yes, it appears to be pretty simple. Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s even in the correct key, which would suck for me.

Oh yeah, check this page out if you want to see it/hear it:

Search for Batman and Elfman to find it.

Huh . . . they’ve got Elfman Batman arrangements for grades 2, 3, and 4 . . . and jazz band (I think that was the Elfman one) . . . and marching band . . . go figure. The marching band thing made me all nostalgic for marching band (even though it’s only been a month!) . . . but then again, everything is. I almost cried about an hour ago when I heard the Magnificent Seven theme on The Simpsons, because that was our parade tune. Aaaaaaaaaaah crap.

I’m sorry I can’t help ya. I’ll try to bring it up with him and see if he’ll let either our symphonic band or concert band play one of the Batman arrangements. He seemed to get my psychic vibes about A Charlie Brown Christmas, which the symphonic band is now playing. Anyone else wanna send out psychic vibes with me? C’mon, I’d post recordings.

This was an article I printed from a site a few years ago; I don’t know if the site still exists or not: http://rhino.harvard.edu/dan/boingo/FSMBartek.html. The only information I have is: “Steve Bartek” article by Lukas Kendall, Film Score Monthly #64, December 1995.

Steve Bartek said: “Well, the problem is that people come to me and give me credit for writing Danny’s music. They hint that well, ‘We know that you really do that stuff’–that’s why he’s sensitive, that’s why [agent] Richard Kraft is sensitive. Danny’s gotten lots of flak over it. They can’t believe that someone who’s a rock and roll singer in an offbeat Los Angeles band can actually write the music that he writes.”

This one’s from http://rhino.harvard.edu/dan/boingo/Variety.html (again, I don’t know if the site is still running or not–I pulled it from about three years ago). “Oingo Boingo (8)” Variety–October 15, 1980; Kirkus Review; Whisky a Go Go, L.A. (I don’t know what any of that means, but it was at the top of the review).

“Recently pacted with A&M-distributed IRS, Oingo Boingo octet still lacks a consistent body of material to launch itself as something more than a local cult attraction, which this group has been for quite some time now….Although the group’s three-man horn section sets the ensamble apart form others in the progressive field, those players were underutilizd and undermixed.”

Not really criticisms….probably not helpful, but it’s all I’ve got–sorry!

not sure if the “rhino” links will work, but if they don’t, just go to http://www.boingo.org and the list of updated links is there. There are TONS of articles and links to reviews there.

You might also try Boingo2001’s site. She also has a nice list of articles, though I can’t remember what is there specifically. Also, not sure of the link, but you can access it through groups.yahoo.com/group/deadmansparty

Can’t help you at all on the score part, except that one of the FSM articles has a couple of pages printed. Those are also in the list at boingo.org.

    Good luck on your paper.

Everyone who critiques Elfman like that should shove a relatively enormous object up their @$$es.

Pammy, I thank you. There’s a lot of good links on that boingo.org site that are helpful. One of the FSM articles discusses Danny’s critics somewhat. I ordered a couple FSM issues, but I wasn’t aware that there were so many articles on him.
