Guestignorant fools such as yourself who reply to their own messages should be denied the right to own computers. btw, what type of music do you listen to?
August 7, 2002 at 12:29 pm #41212Anonymous
GuestMaybe the only music he listens to are the sounds of his own body…

GuestGiven his email address, if it’s a real one, I’d say that’s a boingo fan and boingofans are a bit nerdy as well. Then there’s the rather nerdy image the band projected… This may have been a show of solidarity and not a name calling.
And he didn’t respond to his own message. He put a question in the header and then a very short reply in the message.
I think a better thread might be “Do you think Elfman fans are a little too on the defensive?”
I also have a small suggestion about threads like this. If you think it’s a troll, ignore it. They’re a bit like stray animals. If you feed them, they come back.
Of course, if you don’t feed them, sometimes they post on every related message board or club that they can find and that can be annoying, but when they get no response in 5 locations, they usually take the hint and go away.

GuestYou are right Pammy. I am a Boingo fan and a fan of Danny’s scores. I didn’t mean to affend anyone. I am a certified nerd and was just having some fun. I do think Elfman fans do tend to be a bit defensive and to be honest, quite nerdy. Hey, what the hell is a “Troll”? Excuse me for saying so, but calling people trolls, sounds a little arrogant. Joe

GuestCan you explain what being “nerdy” is please? I know what it is, but I just to want see how you define it. Anyway, what would you call a person who listens to John Williams, Hans Zimmer, James Horner (tumbleweed!), Alan Silvestri, etc.?

GuestI prefer “dork,” thank you very much?
August 7, 2002 at 10:19 pm #41223Anonymous
Guesthow about “misunderstood”, we’re not freaks, we just enjoy a very powerful style of music which many people dont find appealing, whereas rap and pop satisfy these jackasses hunger for entertainment.

GuestFirstly, I said IF you think it’s a troll… so don’t get the impression that I’m calling Joe Blow a troll or saying this thread was a troll.
Now, how to explain what it is. It’s one of those threads (sometimes the poster is labeled as one too) that exists for no real purpose that serves the message board or the newsgroup. Name calling is a very common troll. I would have thought that is what was happening here if I’d not seen the good for your soul email.
Another one is the [subject of your message board] S U C K S thread. No reasons given.
Basically they’re posted by people who have no interest in the subject of the board, they just post crap to try to annoy people or see if they can start a fight.
Usually they are posted by names you’ve never seen on the board. That’s not always true here though. I can remember a few times on this board (back in the days of the old format) when there was some troll activity posted by Ryan. It wasn’t really Ryan though. Ryan isn’t a troll. But someone decided to use his name. You talk about your Pod people, sheesh.
I’ve had a day that’s been really taxing on the brain so I know I’m really rambling. I’m sure someone can offer a more cohesive defintion of troll, but that should give you an idea.

GuestLet’s put it this way: I come here to get away from mass-produced “normal” music, and find others who like to talk about the same things in regards to music. There’s a small, but fiercely loyal contingent of us. Usually, what’s considered “nerdy” isn’t embraced by large groups of people. However, I think the words “nerd” and “geek” are becoming mass-produced as well (take the so-called “geek rock” movement…since when did being a genuine nerd make you popular?) Oh well…I find it kind of enchanting how many of my students go out to “dress up” like a geek (i.e. they’re big fans of Weezer), when I do that every day without trying
Hey Nigel – so, do you reward yourself for all those gold stars by playing a relaxing game of Magic with a few online friends as well? I had a prof in college that gave out gold stars on papers…it was ridiculous…I’m rambling.
Today I get to go to the dentist and change the color of the rubberbands on my braces – joy of joys,

GuestListen folks, at the risk of weakening a nation, let me tell you a little thing or two about being a nerd and listening to Elfman.
Anyone who likes him will be fairly hidden about it. Unless, of course, that person happens to be in a high school marching band — as we’ve already been privy to. A couple times i think i had the opportunity to give the old “Elfman phallus” to a few curious citizens, and let me tell you, it didn’t take them very long to pretty much yank the earphones off and act weird about it, then walk away. Score music is just too pure a medium of emotional communication..and if you look around, this is a private nation, hooked on dance rhythms and lyrics of a Britney or American Idol stature, giving out mutually accepted themes for society to cling to, or whatever tickles the public in their respective G spots. It takes a real open minded soul to admit a desire for this kind of medium, and for that i respect you all. But to call me a nerd because of this admittance? Whats this guy putting in his Captain Crunch?
But i could give a damn what anyone thinks of me. You know, sooner or later film scores will (if it hasn’t already) be grouped together with all the SHOWTUNES fans, who get pegged for being outright GAY…so who knows how strong my line of confidence is, and you can see why i keep my musical tastes to myself. People just don’t understand…Rise above it, i say, and just turn the other cheek…Then , when their not looking, grab the old torch and pitchfork and do a double entendre of the facial region…
Of course, i could be totally wrong. I eat breakfast surrounded by 12,000 Cubans who have a taste for the mediocre. So go figure my sense of privacy.August 12, 2002 at 3:42 am #41266Anonymous
GuestI like to refer to myself as a repressed homocidal maniac who hates children, loves dogs, and is comfortably insane. I know I’m a flamin’ nut, and not quite right in the head–but I figure it’s better than the alternative.
In fact, I would probably be some kinda mass serial killer if it weren’t for watching, writing, and reading all kinds of violently cheesy stuff–that, and I’ve got some kind of moral code, despite what some people may say.
As for being a “nerd” hell, I don’t care what you call me. I’m not gonna make such brash assumptions about everyone else on this site, but I’d say that the people on this discussion board are probably some of the most interesting people I’ve met–and I mean that in the best way possible.
I mean, so what if we like something, or someone who isn’t exactly the most popular norm in society? I for one, just don’t care. I mean, I’ve got a Boingo sign up in my car, and I don’t give a damn if anyone else knows what it is or not–their loss if they don’t, you know?
Besides, I find people who don’t like Elfman music more than a little creepy–so a lot of it factors in to your personal viewpoint.
And by the way, isn’t a troll one of those things that lives under bridges, and possibly smells like cabbage, and asks you a question that you have to answer correctly if you want to pass? They eat children on occasion….I hope.

GuestThis a Pure Assumption and strictly general.
A Nerd typically…
1) Secretly listens to Howard Stern
2) has bad hygeine
3) rarely gets laid
4) wears military fatigues, even when he or she is not actually a member of the military.
5) plays Dungeons and Dragons
6) Listened or still listens to Devo
7) plays computer chess
reads Charles Dickens
9) masturbates in the closet
10) works in hobby shops
11) memorizes movie dialog and constantly uses scenes from movies as examples to support their arguments.
12) fears any form of experimentation when it comes to mind altering drug useHang on, I’m going to go and smoke some pot and see what else I can come up with…

GuestOh Pumpkin, you couldn’t be more incorrect (in my opinion). A nerd is a person who is rejected from society from being different and/or more intellectual (although that response was hilarious). I believe that if anyone likes emotional and dramatic music, they would like Danny Elfman’s scores (though maybe not Boingo).

Guestheh, you forgot to add that said dejected folks have a tendency to do some of the things on his list..hahahaha

GuestI object to number 9.
We’ve come out of the closet.
We do that outside your window now.
NERDS UNITE!

GuestYou can’t get anymore of a textbook definition for “nerd” than that presented in “Welcome to the Dollhouse.” If you’ve not yet seen it, you should. (It’s a neo-classic; I love it!)
******nerd
Pronunciation: ‘n&rd
Function: noun
Etymology: perhaps from nerd, a creature in the children’s book If I Ran the Zoo (1950) by Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel)
Date: 1951
: an unstylish, unattractive, or socially inept person; especially : one slavishly devoted to intellectual or academic pursuits
– nerd·ish /’n&r-dish/ adjective
– nerdy /-dE/ adjective
*Note: taken from the Merriam-Webster site online******On “the list,” you forgot the fact that nerds typically use large words (like “neo-classic”) to impress others with their cranial ability (they also use words like “cranial ability,” which are typically completely fabricated and they’re not quite sure of the actual meaning of the made-up word. Occasionally, they’ll use 4-syllable words like “fabricated,” as well as hound others about spelling and grammatical errors, to further increase their lagging sense of self-esteem). And don’t forget that they look everything up in the dictionary (like the definition of “nerd,” for example. Good God! Who would do such a thing? Hahaha!)
August 13, 2002 at 10:58 am #41295Anonymous
GuestActually, i’m seeing the word NERD being used for other things, and not necessarily having to do with being intellectual. More like retarded…The newer generations are really having a ball warping words and their meanings. I’m still trying to get over the whole Neanderthal-esque “My BAD” that people say. I suppose sounding like a lobotomized Tarzan is cool.

GuestDo any of you collect comic books?
August 16, 2002 at 10:43 am #41338Anonymous
Guesthell no. I outgrew that with watching cartoons when i turned frickin 25. The internet totally wiped those hobbies away.
August 16, 2002 at 5:08 pm #41341Anonymous
GuestI still have my comic book collection enshrined in my closet…and I don’t let anybody in my closet, because they might try to steal them – lol! (And because it would get a little crowded in there…no, just kidding). Dude, I’m a frickin’ Russian literature freak, and am currently trying to learn the language at an age when I should be thinking about “settling down and having kids” (according to my parents and relatives), instead of “wasting my life going to school.” Maybe if I took a break from school, I’d actually have a date instead of hanging out with my profs. How’s that for nerdy? But I just don’t give a crap. “I like my stupid life, just the way it is, and I wouldn’t even change it for a thousand flying pigs.” Well…I would leave MOST of it the same, anyway…
