I trully believe that Danny Elfman should get a goddamn oscar nomination this year!!!!
yeah! damn straight! he has give us the two best scores of the year (spider-man & Red dragon)… and i believe both films will do extremely well at the box office (well, we KNOW spider-man did well and will do better on video and DVD), so this time those
grouchy asses of the academy have a perfectly good reason to nominate him… unless they find a way to nominate “the powerpuff girls movie” for best score… if they dont even nominate him it would trully prove that the academy hates Danny’s guts… like the song… “we shall see”

“I trully believe that Danny Elfman should get a goddamn oscar nomination this year!!!!”

Alonso – so they’ve added another genre of academy awards entitled the “goddamn academy awards?” Will god personally descend to earth (or ascend, whichever way you want to think of it…that’s just my 12 years o’ Catholic schooling kicking off the dust and entering the game…) and present the award to Danny, giving a little speech along the lines of “god would like to give this award to the best damned film composer on earth…*winks and adds as an aside* and I’m reserving a place for you, buddy, right next to Herrmann’s berth, up in the great white marshmallow fluff factory in the sky?” So the Elf has an in with god, does he? Well, I’ll be wound up like a guinea pig on Vivarin and chickpeas…never woulda guessed it, but then again, that Danny is ALWAYS surprising us…

Let me just remind everybody of who the “academy” is. To be nominated, only Danny’s peers get to vote, and that would be other film composers. I think his work this year is the best of anyone in the field, but I find it odd that he gets so many other composing awards (all the BMI and Composer Guild awards) but is continually (except for that 2 nomination year that he should have won for Men In Black, but that non-score score by Anne Dudley for The Full Monty won, but I don’t think I have to bring that back up… or do I? … Where was I? … Oh yea) shut out for the Oscar race. I know he was probably looked passed back in the early days (of Batman and Edward Scissorhands – hard to believe neither of them were even nominated) for being a new kid that was coming from the “wrong side of the tracks” (i.e. Rock “and or” Roll), but I think he has gained the respect of most other composers, and plus the old guard are slowly falling by the wayside. I would wager money that he will get a nod this year, but exactly how much am I willing to put up?… well, I’ve only got a shiny new Red penny (If you think that by that statement I don’t give much stock in the Hollywood community awarding Elfman, then you would be right).

I was under the impression that Danny’s peers NOMINATE him, but when it comes to choosing a winner, everyone in the Academy gets a vote. Hence Titanic and the Full Monty — more mainstream, popular winners. Am I wrong on that? Just curious.

Second — Elfman has said time and again that the “old gaurd” don’t give him any problems. He mentioned Jerry Goldsmith with great respect as an example. From what I’VE heard, it’s the younger guys who didn’t like him, cause they just spent years in music school and were jealous… or didn’t believe he wrote his own music… etc. etc. etc.

Whatever the case, I do hope he gets an oscar SOMEDAY. :-)

Peace Love and all that Jazz. . .

Just how does one get Nominatied and actually voted on is something I’ll maybe never know. I was under the impression that Make-up people vote for Make-up people; Actors vote for Actors, Composers vote for Composers, etc. But do they nominate as well? Or is that someone else?

Anway, why did the Accademy get rid of the BEST SCORE FOR A MUSICAL OR COMEDY award? I always thought that was a good idea…

Your right Texas Ranger, His peers do vote when it comes to nominating, but when the 5 nominees are choosen, then the whole academy votes (same goes for the other catagories except Best Picture which all academy members nominate). Does that answer your question END? Now I think I’m confused (I hope I got that right)?

There are probably more film composers working now that don’t have a degree in film composing than do. Plus, you have a large amount from other musical backgrounds scoring today than you had in the past. Its more diverse now then in the Golden Age when all the scores used mostly a standard Orchestra. It was Herrmann that changed a lot of that with his odd arrangements for films (like Journey to the Center Of the Earth for example). Don’t get me wrong, I love the Golden Age Composers (I count Franz Waxman as one of my favorite composers), but today the soundworld of films has a broader array of musical expressions.

Just some FYI – If any one is a fan of Wynton Marsalis’ compositions, you have to get his new work for Orchestra, Choir, and Jazz Band called All Rise (on 2 CDs). It’s very deep and rewarding music on a large scale. But then again, I might be the only one on this board that likes him (if that’s the case then I’ll shut up now).
