GuestHi!
Is there a way to get notes of Elfman’s scores?
December 6, 2002 at 12:23 pm #43221Anonymous
Guesti’ve got a D and B# at home… i’ll sell ’em for 20bucks a pop – and they’ve both got a seal of approval as being 100 percent pure Elfman Notes…

GuestHey, Devin, I’ve got you beat: I’ve got an entire F bb (double flat) minor chord…lol! I’m selling it on eBay for $15, so far the bidding’s up to $25.97, plus shipping and handling. Any takers?

What exactly do you mean, Uwus?
December 7, 2002 at 12:21 am #43226Anonymous
GuestFbb minor chord? Are you sure it’s not the Eb minor chord? And does it have some weird thing on it saying “Elfman wrote me?”, or what about some drool or something? Am I freaking you out yet?
Knight (Who thinks the guy meant something more along the lines of side-notes about what was going on in the score, and sorry bro, most composers to my knowledge don’t do that on the printed score, and even a printed score of Elfman is practically impossible to find, unless you want it for band or piano.)

GuestKnight – The Fbb minor chord was a joke
I’m a musician, and yes, I get it…but just to be obstinate, I’m going to keep calling it the Fbb minor chord. And yes, this particular chord has drool all over it, Dannydrool, in fact. (It’s a known fact that he’s a compulsive drooler – in his latest interview, he mentioned something about it being a stress reliever). I stole the chord itself from his bedroom, right after taking his car out for a spin. It’s the “Lost Danny Elfman Fbb Minor Chord Concerto.” You mean you’ve never heard of it?-E (who is simply bizarre)

GuestMhm, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS ( one of my favorite Elfman scores) notes.

GuestErika – – oooh, will you tell me where to find this interview?
Thanks
– Me (who is embarassed all over at the mention of anything minor, after realizing that for several bassoon auditions she was playing a melodic minor scale instead of a harmonic minor scale . . . shame on her, the nerve!)

GuestInfynitie –
Wasn’t sure if you were serious ornot, but alas, it’s not a real interview…sorry, just one that I made up to make the non-funny joke sound a little better. Good luck with the bassoon auditions! Melodic, harmonic…it’s just a couple notes’ difference

GuestJust ONE note difference! Oh, and I love the harmonic minor, almost as much as I love the modes.

Guest*takes a deep breath*
Well, Uwus wanted to ask if there was a way to get printed SCORES of Elfman’s music.
In German, scores are called “Noten”, and since our friend Uwus *is* German, he probably mixed it up.December 9, 2002 at 1:20 am #43266Anonymous
GuestKnight-who-spends-too-much-time-on-music-studies –
Natural minor scale: same key signature as relative major.
Harmonic minor scale: Raise note 7
Melodic minor scale: Raise notes 6 and 7 ascending, lower them into “natural minor scale position” when descending.
Depending on how you look at it, it COULD be one note difference between harmonic and melodic scales (looking at the ascending pattern, only one change – raising 6th – is added), whereas if you look at the ascending AND descending patterns, it could be a 2-note difference between the scales (ascending, raised 6th added, descending, lowered 7th added. The lowered 6th is the same note in both patterns, so I negated that). I was referring to both the ascending and descending patterns when I said, “it’s only a couple notes’ difference,” but I could see how it could be construed as a one-note difference as well. Hope that clears up my reasoning.

GuestIsn’t it so nice that everyone knows so much about music here, and is so willing to share it all with everyone else? I think it’s very nice, so guys like me can hide in the shadows, and learn things, even though I’m not hiding anymore. It is hard to ignore the arrogance of it all, too, but that is only a personal problem that I have. Sooooo, does anyone know anything about getting any scores? I’d like to know, too (even though about 1 person a week posts this type of question, and no one really ever has a good answer).

GuestI said HARMONIC minor didn’t I? One note difference in the HARMONIC minor. I didn’t say MELODIC minor, nor NATURAL minor. lmao
Knight (Sorry, I just got confused, and I still love the modes more)

GuestKnight – you *said* “one note difference” in relation to Infynitie’s comment of playing melodic minor when she should’ve been playing harmonic minor. Yeah, I know that there’s one note difference between harmonic and natural minor scales. What I meant was that, depending on how you look at the ascending/descending patterns of melodic minor, there could be either a one or two note difference when comparing melodic and harmonic minor scales. (I took 4 semesters of music theory, enough to get a music major. I’m not a composer or anything, so if you want really intricate analyses, that won’t come from me. I’m a complete idiot when it comes to musical compositions).
Hooray for Dorian! What’s that? Yeah; I like the mode, too…

GuestMyxolydian can kick Dorian’s ass anyday! And Aeolian has them all beat (I know, I know, it’s the damn minor). Well, you sure as hell have more schooling then I do, but I just study this stuff on my own, with the same textbooks they use in schools, because I cannot afford college. But, in any case, I really don’t worry about the acuall minor methods, because most of the people I know write off scale most of the time, then figure out the key later (it’s not “proper” but who cares). In any case, I am glad to hear I am not the only one in here who might know what a “Key signature” or “Meter” is

GuestHa! Just put “Dorian” in there because I thought it was a fun pun on music AND literature. Truthfully, yes, Aeolian is my favorite mode as well. I’m a firm believer that I never had to go to school for neither my music, nor my English major. (I did it because I’m a geek and I’ve always loved the academic side of school – debating theories, talking with profs, etc). They’re both disciplines you can learn without any formal schooling – look at Danny, look at Whitman. Neither of them really had any formal schooling in their disciplines and look where they ended up! (Funny this is all coming from a high school English teacher…) I’m just trying to teach the kids while they *have* to be in school, make good use of their forced learning, I suppose.

GuestWell, crikey, I’m just full of grammatical errors tonight (or rather, this morning) aren’t I? Double negative in the last message should be changed to: “I’m a firm believer that I never had to go to school for EITHER my music OR my English major…” Figure that if I talk about ’em as much as I currently have, I better damn well start acting like I actually know the conventions. Lol!

GuestOkay, is there a way to get “NOTEN” by Danny Elfman? Would be really cool to play his music!!!!
Or is there now way to get them?December 11, 2002 at 6:17 am #43360Anonymous
GuestUwus – did you actually take a look at my post?!?
http://www.halleonard.com is the only way to get Elfman scores. They’ve got a NBCM voice&piano-score, some Sleepy Hollow stuff – and a brass-band version of the Spider-Man Main Titles (which is kind of strange since it’s really heavy on strings).
December 11, 2002 at 8:36 am #43361Anonymous
GuestIf you have an AMRO music store close to you, you can search through their scores (which is really fun) and you might find the Jazz Band arrangement of the Simpson’s theme. It is really close to the original (sorry, no strings). I also found a Jazz Band Arrangement of Lapti Nek – the song that was in the original release of Return Of The Jedi! I also found the Maynard Ferguson version of Sesame Street – if you like jazz you have to hear this! Also I found a great arrangement of the Flintstones. A band I was in after High School called Green Eggs and Spam played all of these except Lapti Nek, but I had to do some editing to get the piece down to a septet. So the moral of this story is that AMRO rules! Check them out if you can find one – I have to drive almost 200 miles to find the closest to me. They also have a large selection of Band scores and other sheet music and manuscript paper of all kinds.

You’ll find links to Hal-leonard.com and other sheet music sites there.
Sorry, Shock and Nat — don’t mean to steal your thunder. Hopefully if we repeat it… well, you never know — three time’s the charm.

GuestSo…what exactly does that site contain? I don’t need another Elfman discussion board. Geez; what I really need are some “noten” from the Elfman! *Silly grin* Just kidding, guys…
