Guestanyone noticed how ottman knocked at elfman on the X2 DVD
so like are they enemies or somethingJanuary 16, 2005 at 9:34 pm #53169Spider-Fan
ParticipantI’ve heard of this feud before. Me, I’m a big fan of both composers and it saddens me that there could be some animosity between them. I’ve actually arranged for John to answer a few questions of mine for my school newspaper, so perhaps I’ll sneak that question by him.

ParticipantWhere exactly on the DVD does he state that?
January 17, 2005 at 2:30 am #53171Spider-Fan
ParticipantHe doesn’t state it specifically, but he does refer to how he’s not into the way that Danny Elfman composes using computer software. It really doesn’t sound so direct to me.

Participantremember how elfman used a lot of synthesizers and drums on “apes”
well ottman made a smart comment about that, that’s why i was wondering if he hated elfman or notJanuary 17, 2005 at 3:53 am #53173mike
Participanti like ottman too. the “jean grey theme” from X2 is one of my fav. themes of all time
even though he ripped off goldsmith X2 was allrightJanuary 17, 2005 at 3:55 am #53174mike

ParticipantI re-watched that interview, and I stand by “indirect.”
January 17, 2005 at 5:06 am #53178mike
Participantoh common but that was the main tools that elfman used to score “apes”
more than indirectJanuary 17, 2005 at 6:57 am #53180Danny Burton
ParticipantGood lord. People can see and hear anything they want to hear.
I re-watched that interview and I went in expecting to hear him saying “Elfman’s a HACK! Drop dead, Danny!” but he just says he’s not into synths and so but respects the people who do, but then at the end he says he uses them to hear what the cues sound like before the orchestra plays them.
WTF?
January 17, 2005 at 9:30 pm #53181mike
Participantexcuse my ignorance man. that’s why i was asking
i thought he was maknig a stab at elfman
honest mistake i guessJanuary 24, 2005 at 3:51 am #53311Feezleday
ParticipantAm I some kind of moron, cause I listened ot the Requiem for a Score interview with John Ottman on the second disk, and the only thing I heard was that he liked traditional scores, and only likes synth when its incorporated in with orchestra, but I didn’t hear the words Danny or Elfman mentioned during the entire thing, when did he supposedly mention POTA?
January 24, 2005 at 2:16 pm #53314mike
Participanthe didn’t have to say elfman’s name to suggest that’s who he meant
but since everyone seems to think i’m wrong i must be truly wrong after allmaybe i read too much into things

ParticipantHe might have been referring to Kamen, who did the first X-Men score, and did use alot of synth.
I wouldnt think that he didnt like Elfman, but even if he did it’s probably because of competition getting jobs, because you gotta admit alot of Ottman’s stuff is rather Elfman-esque, and Danny has got a much bigger name for himself.January 24, 2005 at 6:28 pm #53317Spider-Fan
ParticipantBut John Ottman is working his way up. He might have been referring to the late Kamen’s X-Men score, which often had an annoying amount of synth that I know Bryan Singer wasn’t very fond of. I would have liked that score a lot beter if he had stuck to the orchestral theme that only made its way out a few times. John Ottman’s X2 score is among my favorites.

Participantthe jean grey theme is very beautiful, can’t wait to hear what he does for fantastic four.
i hope Sony pics. let him do spiderman 3 if elfman drops out *which he will*January 24, 2005 at 7:27 pm #53319mike
Participanteveryone keeps referring to X1 so i guess he meant him not elfman
