It was a rainy August day in the year 1999. I went to the record store with my dad in hopes of finding something. I think I may have been planning on getting a Boingo CD, but im not sure. I went looking for the album with a familiar song. I had fell in love with Weird Science and No One Lives Forever, but decided to try and find the one with NOLF on it. I found it, Dead Man’s Party on the shelf. Huh, I got Weird Science too anyway. I bought Dead Man’s Party of course, and that CD helped me through a tough year at school. Then other Boingo albums came and helped me through that year as well. Then they helped me out all the time, not just at school. Then one day, I found that I was alive. It had been years since I started listening to Boingo and I never killed myself. They helped me out of depression better than any psychiatrist or anti-depressant drug ever could. They have been helping me through boughts of depression for a long time now. The music that they performed gave me something to live for. Without it, I may not be alive today. I’d give anything to go to the last five nights of Farewell. Anybody else remember their first time?

The very first Boingo song I ever listened to was “We Close Our Eyes.” A guy I knew introduced me to Boingo and DE’s music. I suddenly figured out that I had found a type of music that I really, genuinely enjoyed…it took off from there. That song will always be my favorite Boingo tune – for many, many reasons. I’ll spare you all the details.

Chris – I went through the same thing with Nirvana, though it wasn’t as upbeat as Boingo. The first Elfman piece that really got to me (and the first piece of music that ever moved me), was Danny’s score to Batman, which I saw twice in the theatre. I never even knew about Boingo until about 1995.

Well, don’t sweat it–it’s of my personal opinion that the vast majority of people in the world have thought about killing themselves at some point in time, some just more than others….

(Course, I could be wrong–I’m not a very good judge of society! I just know how I’ve felt over the years)….

Anyways, I first found out about Danny back in 1989 (I was eleven). And, it was only a matter of time before I decided I should look into this Oingo Boingo deal–what with it being the same guy and all….

So, it was around 1996 (I’m a little slow, can ya tell?) that I sent off and got my first Boingo tape–Best ‘O Boingo. Not their best work, but a nice cross-section of what they’d done over the years. The first song I ever heard was “Dead Man’s Party” and that’s how it all started….

Since then, (there was a period of four years I went to school via public transportation) Danny has saved me countless times from having to talk to strange men smelling of rotten vegetables, and odd women babbling to themselves
that dinner is a chicken named Francis….

(By the way, I listened to my walkman if the batteries were dead or not)! So, needless to say, I will forever be grateful to Danny for that!

Nowadays, his work mostly helps me when I’m stuck on something I’m working on–you’d be amazed how quick you can draw while listening to some Boingo!

So yeah, it’s nice to know that art saves people on a daily basis–and in more ways than one!

    (I don’t think I ever found out I was “alive-alive” though–and I like it that way)!

Wow, here’s a bit of Boingo randomness for you – I was talking to a composer acquaintance of mine last night and we got on the subject of Boingo. For some reason or another, I had never quite thought of him as being a DE fan…not only was I surprised to learn that he got turned on to Boingo at 16, but that his best friend is a Danny Elfman fanatic (Boingo included)! Funny what you learn, eh?

Speaking of reminiscing over the angst-ridden high school years, I hauled out my old punk/ska collection (very substantial, actually) the other day, and must ask: is anybody else reminded of Boingo when listening to Reel Big Fish and the Bosstones?

Yes, I’d put SNZ in that category as well…from what I’ve heard of them. See, I haven’t listened to anything of theirs other than “Hell” (which is a great video, btw).

Funny you mention Reel Big Fish… Does anyone know if John Avila is still producing for them?

Jo Elfgirl (smiling…remembering the Farewell video with Avila jumping around the whole time…he’s so funny)

I think Avila’s production company got bought out by a larger company…not quite sure, though. Yeah, Avila on the Farewell video was almost better than Danny…almost ;-)

The first Oingo Boingo I listened to was Dead Man’s Party, and as soon as heard It’s Just Another Day, I fell in love. It was immediatley (and still is) my favourite song in the world. My favourite line was when he sang something like: –
“…and just when I think, that things are in their place, the heavens are secure – the whole thing explodes in my face…” GENIUS!! Also I just want to say “YES” to guy asking if Reel Big Fish reminds me of Oingo Boingo. I love Reel Big Fish and can’t wait for the 4th of February, when they come to Glasgow. If Danny happens to be reading this, if you could just send me an e-mail and say “Hi” I would love that! Ha ah! Fat-chance everyone says!
