GuestI recently composed a tune I thought some of you might like. It’s SO out of style of the music I usually compose because I’m trying new things, techniques, instruments. I had kind of a Mario (you know the Nintendo game) theme in mind while I composed it. Namely the new one called Super Mario Sunshine for the Gamecube that was recently released in Japan. . . I guess I’m a Nintendo nerd as much as I am a Danny Elfman nerd.

Tell me how you like it, even if you DESPISE it. . . Please! 8O)

GuestHey there
Do you mean ‘Farmland Dangers’? I couldn’t see a link for ‘Funny Farm’…
Let me know, and I’ll get it.

GuestLOL, I like it, except it sounds like it could be a little longer
Oh, where’d you get your choir samples from nigel?
July 23, 2002 at 11:02 pm #40969Anonymous
GuestYeah, I’m making it longer. I forgot to state that it’s just a demo of what’s to come.
I got the samples from this site. . . I forget what it is. I’ll find it and link to it today.
Toby, no it’s not Farmland Dangers. I don’t know what the problem is, maybe you just need to hit the “refresh” button. I just updated yesterday, so that may be the problem. . .

GuestToby, the link should be there now. I fixed it.

GuestJuju, I got the choir samples from this site: http://www.thesoundsite.net/sf_c_dirlist.tml All the samples are in Soundfont format/.sf2.
The name is “Choir Soul Ahhs” I think. That or “Choir Pop Ahhs”. Either way, both are very good!

GuestGot it Nigel
As a ‘Mario’ kind of theme – yup, I reckon it works well. (I’m listening to it again as I go – trying to get a handle on it). I downloaded the Farm Danger one as well by mistake, but truth to tell – I actually preferred that one
. With this Funny Farm, I reckon the theme is really good. (Bear in mind I know very little about music theory – although I am a professional dancer, and have dealt with a lot of MUSIC in my time).
If I may say – to an untrained ear, I reckon you could work on your transitions more, if that makes any sense. To me, it sounds quite metric – a chunk of this, repeated four times with slight variations, then a new theme, repeat THAT one 3 or four times. You see what I mean? I’m a creative person myself (although I make dance) and what I would say is try to make more of a ‘tapestry’. Like a sonata – a bit more rhapsodic. Let your imagaination (which you obviously have) run a bit more freely, and maybe then come back, ‘tidy up’ with form and something.
I could go on – lol – but I’d bore you. I’m always on the lookout for new music to create dances for, so I enjoy talking about it.
Kindest Regards,
Toby

Guestladies and gents, if you have loaded it, you have just heard a very fun, (note the name,) very raw piece of work by our nigel. I really enjoyed it. it definatley reminds me of a nintendo game, but I’d lean more towards a harvest moon scene, if you know what I mean. I must have imagined it, but I think I heard a rooster crow in that one. hang on.. yup my mistake. very great job, mr. maestro.
lexi: watch out for that.. tree.

GuestHey, this sounded fantastic. Let’s hear more! I am actually starting up a feature for my site CINEMUSIC, about folks who compose filmmusic-like music for fun. Average people whose careers have little to nothing to do with film music, basically.

GuestOh, cOOL! Thanks everyone for the feedback. I’ve been working on it and I have a much longer version I will post if you want to hear that one. It’s alot better than this one.

So, Ryan, when will this feature be up on your site? What is it exactly?

GuestPretty weird; you’ve got some Mario in there with the steel drums and then you have that really enthic beat kind of doubled on the pizzicato strings and that piano is a mix of classical somewhat and then the Elfmanesque choir. Real nice sounding though though. I’m a composer too and I’m kind of curious as to what you use to /compose record this because it has a really nice sound to it.

GuestSorry, Rob, for not getting back to you. I didn’t know anyone replied!
I use Cakewalk Sonar and use Soundfonts (SF2) for my sounds. A Sound Blaster sound card is needed to use soundfonts. I’m actually in the process of upgrading to GigaSamples. MUCH better than SF2.
I use Soundforge to add reverb and make an MP3 out of the song. That’s about it. I hope you actually see this, as it’s a pretty old topic. Heh.
