GuestI’ve received my Darkman CD, really delighted! I put it on, and… the main title is similar to the ‘bad guy theme’ from SW Episode 2! Listen to the first track, SW Main Title and Ambush on Corruscant, when it hits 3:00, it’s similar to Darkman main title. Could it be that John Williams… no way…!

GuestReally, now. I find it hard to believe John Williams just flat out rips off other composers. We’ve been through this before: No one composes “in a vacuum.” Just by listening to music as a person grows up, his own compositions will naturally have certain tone qualities, perhaps even startlingly similar melodies and harmonics.
There’s no such thing as a truly “original” composer because each composer builds on the ideas of those before him, as well as his contemporaries.
Elfman’s own violin tango that plays while Beetlejuice is reading the obituaries is markedly similar to several classical works.
It’s no shame to say that something sounds like something else. As someone who enjoys both Elfman AND Williams (if you can believe that), I’d have to say both composers have works that sound like other works — whether it’s conscious or unconscious, I can’t say.

GuestI agree with Brian there, Elfman has alot of tonal qualitys of other composers (listen to Herrmann’s Vertigo) but yet still has his own style slapped into the mix. The same with John Williams, and Elmer Berstien, and Howard Shore, and Beethoven (Muahahaha), so stop fretting if you hear a theme that sounds kinda like Elfman, because Elfman’s themes might sound alot like others you have heard as well (But as always, the orchestration is usually very different). Just kick back and enjoy the music, instead of pulling it apart

Knight (Will I ever get tired of the Red Dragon soundtrack? I think not…)

GuestThe first time I heard the Episode 2 score I thought the same exact thing Reza. They are the same 4 or so intervals, but the end of the motives are definitely different.
Michael, it sounds like you are getting tired of all of the Horner “plagiarizing” debate and wish to stir that spoon in a different pot. And you know what, I don’t blame you, but I do like the Episode 2 score a lot.
The Williams “quote” is interesting, because the only temp work that is ever done in the Star Wars movies are from, well… Star Wars movies, and I think that the Darkman score is so obscure that John Williams has even heard it – at the age of 70 that man stays quite busy, and has been so for many many years.
Nat who is back after a little hiatus
Still I do feel myself saying, “Danny wrote that!” every time that motive is played

GuestWant to play rough? A phrase from the end credits of “Dolores Claiborne” is note-for-note identical to a phrase from an NSync song. (I’ll let those of you with too much time on your hands find what I’m talking about.) NOW who’s stealing music?? Certainly ain’t Williams.

GuestWell I’m sure it’s just a coincidence, just like what I said: NO WAY! I was just a bit surprised… but now just like Knight said, I am really enjoying it… My favorit: Main Titles, Carnival from Hell, and High Steel
