Well kiddos, after reading some of the other posts about how Danny uses Macs, I did alittle checking. Danny uses PCs too. There is a PC only program called Gigastudio which he uses. James Newton Howard and probably the other guys use it in thier homw studios too. They use the Macs for sequencing and mastering (I think). Now someone said that composers just can’t use PCs for that kinda thing. Well, they are terribly wrong. Because of that sampler that is available, and the huge amount of products that support PCs as well as Macs (like Samplers and Mixers), you can turn your computer into a virtual orchestra. Then for the Sequencing. Macs have a program called Studio Visions Pro which is rumored to be the best sequencer for computers. I don’t know, haven’t tried it, but PCs have a huge amount of sequencers too, one of the biggest being Cakewalf SONAR 2 XL, which can probably give you as much versitility as the SVP program (once again, that is a guess). Now for mastering. Alot of people use an enormous amount of DSP effects for thier mastering (Waves is probably the biggest one), and I know that some of these effects are not available on the PC, but most of them are. There is a massive amount of Audio editing programs out for PC, which could probably match what the Mac can give. So the best choise ideally would be to get both a PC and a Mac for the maximum amount, but PCs can rival Macs in the audio world any day.

Well, I have a friend who uses half of that stuff (not the Mac stuff though), so I know a bit about it.

I understand. It was just a funny post coming outta the blue and all.

    >>>(I thought you PC users would be glad, so shoot me)<<< I tend not to get involved in computer politics… though I do own a PC… not a Mac. However, “if there’s a steady paycheck in it, I’ll believe anything you say.” Peace Love and all that Jazz. . . 8-)

Well, since everybody *else* is confessing their love for others, I’m going to take a big step, and proclaim my deepest affection for none other than…the makers of Haagen-Dazs ice cream! Hooray for expensive, chocolatey, sugarey goodness that rots one’s teeth and makes them feel a heckuva lot better about bad situations :-) (Of course, film music also makes me feel better about bad situations, but it doesn’t have the added bonus of being edible and rotting my teeth while at the same time, fattening me up for the witch…)

-E (Hooray for Danny Elfman and Haagen-Dazs. If Ben and Jerry’s made an ice cream and named it after Danny, I’d want it to be called “The Forbidden Cone”…but only odd people like us would understand it, and nobody but me would find it humorous…)

Love the idea, too bad nobody understands what I was saying though.

    Knight,

From what i understand macs are the industry standard and with programs like pro tools and digital performer you can’t go wrong.

I know lots of professionals use gigasampler because it is the only software sampling program which can run samples directly from your hard disk, meaning you can create colossal sound samples which is virtually impossible with hardware samplers.

I don’t have a mac but i have a pc with many of the programs you mentioned above… i hear macs are much better… wish i had the money to buy one.

I don;t know much about macs but I do know they are used very much in the professional fields. Music, graphics/animation, publishing, etc. are all dominated by macs, i think it has something to do with that dual processor thing :P

PCs have dual processing capabilitys too. And my point was that composers use both, not just Macs.

    Knight (Thank god for Gigastudio)

“…but PCs can rival Macs in the audio world any day…”

As long as the softwares are based on Windows it will never happen in professional world…

Cubase VST works just fine as a sequencer when i am composing. That is for my PC and i dont see why a mac would be the better choice for compoing. PC has as much or even more music software than the MAC so if u have a PC stich with it.

To Zuippis: You use a Mac I am sure, and have never worked with a PC.

To ElfmanFreak: Have you tried Cakewalk SONAR? I worked with Cubase VST before and found SONAR to be much better. I also hear very good things about Cubase SX.

    To Knight:

Ok. first of all there was some sarcasm in my previous post. Let’s just say that I’m not the biggest fan of Windows…;)

You are right, I use Mac in professional productions. Well, one reason is that Pro Tools which I use is optimized for Mac environment and the workstation is constructed ONLY for Pro Tools use. This new Pro Tools HD seem to be available for Win XP too, but I don’t have any experience with that.

Though, in my “homestudio” I have an ordinary PC. I use mainly Cubase VST as a sequencer and some Wave editors such as Sound Forge, Wavelab and Cooledit. As a midi sequencer (and why not audio too) Cubase is wonderful and I use it all the time in the song-writing, arranging and orchestrating phases.
