ParticipantIs anybody familiar with the work of composer John Murphy? I know he’s a british guy and I loved his soundtrack to the zombie movie 28 Days Later. He did the soundtrack to the new film by the same director, Danny Boyle, a kind of modern fairytale called Millions (and based in a wonderful little book, by the way). The problem is… the main theme from Millions (called House Building) is one of the most shameless and embarassing Danny Elfman rip-offs in recent history. It’s so undeniably Scissorhand-ish, one wonders why didn’t they pay Elfman for the rights and used the Main Titles from Edward Scissorhands instead! It’s a big disappointment: Murphy seemed an original composer. Try to find the soundtrack to Millions on iTunes. There’s a 30 sec. sample there which will be more than enough to see what I mean.

ParticipantYes I thought it when I saw the film the last year. At the begining I really thought Danny composed the score, specially when the little boy meets his mother at the end ( you see ?). Anyway the comoser did a great work. The film is wonderful. Really.

ParticipantDont get too upset about stuff like this bro, it is how things in this industry go sometimes. The director could have told him that he wanted a VERY elfmanish score, or the composer may have had no time to score the film, or that cue could have needed to be rushed at the last second, ect.
Knight (And you have 2 hours to write a 5 min cue that sounds along the lines of The Ice Dance….what would you do?)

ParticipantFor my part, I find that when a director asks to his composer an “elfmanish score” , it’s a honour. The composer does honour to Danny Elfman, no ? And the Efman fans know that it looks like Elfman’s music.
The Elfman style inspires the others composers, like Hermann or Nino Rota did for Elfman.June 8, 2005 at 8:49 pm #54177aLfR3dd

ParticipantI don’t know what in the world you are talking about, but that is against copyright laws (not to mention, not being orriganal!!!). So, why hasn’t anything come up about this that people in the U.S would find out?????
