I know this is really geeky…
But, on the first track on MIIB, the “worm lounge” cut, I think somwhere around the 1:45 mark, there is a really quiet sample of a woman’s voice that says, “Oh!…I’m sorry”. it repeats a few times between the choir’s “oooo’s” and “aaaa’s”.
If you have the volume cranked, at the end of the track its one of the last things you can hear after the music ends. I thought it was really cool and wondered if anyone had an idea as to who it is and what prompted Danny to do this.
Or for that matter, if anyone else hears the mystery voice! If not, this could mean a set back for me in group.

Probably some kind of subliminal message. Danny’s always doing that. . . Sometimes I can read his mind. . . and he speaks to me in my head. . . . . He says some pretty odd things to me. He even taught me to compose!! Nothing new. ;)

I loved that in the score, and I guess that it was probably recorded when the choir was recorded, and I also guess that it was not on purpose. Danny just thought it would be cool to sample it and insert it. It reminded me of what he did on BOINGO the last studio album from Oingo Boingo where in the long song “Change” he sample what seems like party conversation. Cool stuff that shows how inventive and willing to do the unconventional thing makes Danny one of the best in my eyes.

Speaking of “Change”, the conversation part features a voice that sounds like Bruce Campbell!

I’ve never thought about that before, but your right Ryan one of the voices do sound like Bruce Campbell. Wow, just never caught that before, thanks!

I went to South America with Richard Nixon. . . and it really wasn’t that fun. heheh.

Eh..all i could really hear were the baboons that pretty much explained the whole conversation. Funny @!#$.

Yeah, Bruce Campbell also talks to me inside my head. Along with Danny, and a strange little clique of ravenous, llama-flesh-eating porcupines… (But seriously, that section of “Change” does sound like Bruce ;))

Hey Erika, are their any porcupines in South America?

    :-)

    Just playing with ya!

About the Bruce Campbell dialogue snippet in “Change”, I might be wrong but I’m pretty sure that was Sam Phipps Saxophone player from Oingo Boingo.

I wonder if Danny used the same party recording from the Boingo album. That woman sounds just like the worm lounge recording:

    Woman
“Well, who else did you know? What other famous people do you know?”

    Sluggo
    “Oh, uh… you name em’.”

    Woman
    Yeah?

    Sluggo
I went to South America with Richard Nixon.

    Woman
*Laughter * Richard Nixon? *Laughter *

    Sluggo
Uh… and it really wasn’t THAT funny.

I love the section of Change. They way the melody is played by in strings… good stuff.

    How do you know?

Nat of the South American Porcupine Society,

Geez, man, you of all people should know that there are porcupines in South America! Have you heard about my controversial new research project? I am currently trying to cross mangoes with porcupines, in an effort to market produce targeted towards masochists. And in the spirit of fair trade, I do pay my workers, and porcupines and mangoes (and orangutans and breakfast cereals…) a liveable wage. Any takers?

-Erika of the I’ve-had-far-too-much-fair-trade-coffee-this-morning tribe (found deep in the Amazon rainforest…but don’t come looking for us! We are quick, like mongoose!)

PS: You know, I’m with Bodhi on the idea that the guy in “Change” is actually Sluggo. If you’ve ever listened to his interview on “Boingo Farewell” videos, or his bit in “Reptiles and Samurai,” the inflection in “Change” is quite an uncanny resemblance to the two. (and Bruce Campbell, and Brother Maynard, and Tim…)

    Thank you Erika,

I needed a good laugh today (of all days) and you came through, so I guess you get the large stuffed bunny with the missing eye. Are you going to ride the Ferris Wheel next, no wait a minute, your more of a Fun House or House Of Horrors type, right?

I can almost here the Barker, can’t you?

    Sincerely,
    Thank you.

    Nat of the Carney people

Note: and starting it with “…you of all people should know…” was a nice touch.

    “How do you know?”

Well, because Sam Phipps sounds exactly like that. Also, Sluggo often performs odd little vocals like that.
    See: Reptiles and Samurai.

Speaking of voices and strange things in Elfman works…

A long time ago, my older brother owned every Oingo Boingo CASSETTE (the OLD days). One day, his self-reversing tape player broke in such a way that, although the tape reversed directions, it didn’t play Side 2. Instead, it played Side 1 in reverse. (BACKMASKING!!)

I wouldn’t have believed it if he hadn’t played it for me for my own ears, but:

When you played the song forward, there was nothing suspicious, but in one of the songs (and I’m going to have to call him and ask), when played in reverse, you can hear a man’s voice, crystal clear, reciting verses from the Bible that are all about “being born again.”

I’ll get the precise data on which song that is as soon as I can. Just thought I’d throw that into the “Mystery Sample” conversation.

W-T-F?! NO WAY!! . . . THAT’s creepy! @_@ What were the lyrics? I HAVE to know what song this is. I HAVE to know! You make SURE and find out which song this is! ;)

    Oh cool.

When you play Cry of the Vatos backwards you hear this:

    Praise God brothers and sisters.
Just once or twice is good for your soul, Praise God!
Accept Jesus into your heart and you will saved.
    You will receive everlasting life.
Listen to me, I’ve sinned, I know.

    Second part:
Praise Jesus and you will be saved, saved, saved…
Praise God, you are healed, healed, healed…

I listened to all my Boingo cassettes backward last night and I distinctly heard a voice urging me to except the TRUTH about James Horner. Over, and Over, and Over, and Over and…

    Ha ha, Beth! :-D

I’m still trying to get ahold of my brother to find out which song has the bible words. Might be that Cry of the Vatos that I remember hearing.

Confirmed: Cry of the Vatos is the piece with the words. Not Bible verses per se, but my older brother confirms it’s Danny’s voice doing the “preaching.” Phew…got that out of my system.

I literally don’t believe it…and although it sounds cool, I’m too lazy to go out and search for a tape (I prefer vinyl, and then CDs, myself).

I reversed the song last night. It works! You really should hear it if your an Elfman fan. :) Maybe I’ll post a link to the reversed sample mp3 someday.
