GuestOk, since I am so p.o.ed about Danny Elfman STILL not getting an Acadamy Award (or a nomination for that matter), I was checking out some of the people who were nominated last year. Well, one score that I have always really liked is Bicentennial Man by James Horner (some know where I am going with this already), and not to my surprise was Horner up for an Academy Award for best score on A Beautiful Mind. So after I got a copy, I sat down and started to listen to it. Well, a track called A Kaleidoscope of Mathematics came on…AND IT WAS BICENTENNIAL MAN!!! The theme was the same, the chord progression was the same, the damn KEY was the same. The only difference was that it was in a faster tempo and Charlotte Church was doing some vocals on it. Then it came to me. The Acadamy is full of a bunch of retards who wouldn’t know excellent original music is if it bit them in the ass. Danny deserves to have a whole stockpile of Oscars now. That is just wrong. If they were not such morons they would have put up Bicentennial Man for an Oscar, not the recycled A Beautiful Mind score. Sorry if you already heard about this, but it just bugs me.
Knight (Now that I think about it, maybe it is a good thing that Danny hasn’t recieved an Oscar, maybe that would mean he sucks too)

Guestthe quality of the ceremony and the rewards that are getting funnier every year make me think that it’s a good thing that Danny never get any oscar…

GuestDanny is a member of the “Academy” that you speak of, and only composers nominate in the score category. Usually it is the film’s high profile that will get the nod before actual merit of the score itself. An exception to this was John Corigliano’s great score to The Red Violin. I don’t see why anyone should get all bent out of shape about Danny and the “Academy”? It doesn’t matter even without an Oscar to his name he is among the elite (top 5 composers) working today as his large string of Summer Blockbuster Films have shown. Hollywood is all about the $$$ so why gripe about this subject. I enjoy your postings on this board Knight, but there are many more interesting things to discuss than who when Oscars and why – it’s all about the music for me; not what someone says it good or not.
By the way, I thought that A Beautiful Mind was the only score that was not worthy of a nomination – and I guess that’s a good thing to me, but not essential to my enjoyment of the music.
Nat, feel free to disagree with me if you want to

Guestnominations or not, it doesn’t really matter. I mean, there have been incredibley important composers who have gone over looked or were hardly recognized by the Academy. I mean, who is going to argue GOldsmith’s important in the history of film music, and he’s won only once. Morricone, for crying out loud, has never won. It doesn’t matter. I think Spider-Man did exceptionally well, but they will never make the push for it to be nominated…so who knows, who cares.
Lots seemed disappointed with Williams’ score for the firs Potter, and that got nominated…I but the Two Towers will be nominated, and it’s not even released yet, but it’s just got a high profile…who knows, who cares. It’s all good, there’s some great music being made.

GuestHey Nat: It was more about Horner ripping himself off, that is what made me mad. But I do think Elfman need more recognition, it’s not about $$$ in my opinion. He should be as big a name as Williams.
As for the Academy, if you notice, A beautiful mind won best picture over LOTR, which was a better movie by far (when it comes to all the things that went into it). I see a trend on that, if it’s not drama, it’s not a winner. And if you wanna talk about music, don’t EVEN get me started on the grammys.

Guest*Grins* Okay, so it’s not *my* line, but *somebody* had to do it. (Yes, I nominated myself for the honor).

GuestNever paid attention to critics–never will.
And, I think the Acadamy’s just like a bunch of critics: they pick who they want to brag about, trash the rest, and go with it–it all just comes down to personal opinions. I know who/what I like, so I don’t let it bother me.
Besides, most really good artists don’t get recognized until they’re dead, anyways. (Please don’t kill Danny–just making a point)!

Guestto the people who know a bit about music and enjoy filmmusic elfman would be well respected im sure. from a musical point danny’s music is much more inventive and innovative than williams’s music. its to teh people who dont really care about good orchestral filmmusic( or any orchestral msuic!) that think williams is the best..because hes all they probably hear about from his big mainstram movies he scores. personally i dont think he comes anywhere close to elfman!

GuestI guess I can’t like both Elfman and Williams then?

Guestoh nat, you can like who you want! (just not horner. i kid! i kid! i was just being stereotypical!
fellas! (special jack skellington lisp; sounds like ‘fellath’) you gus really need to have the academy spelled out for you! they know about music because they are composers! (well, most of them know about music.) stop caling them retards, because you not only insult this imaginary group of people who say, “no elfman! mark motherbaugh only does rugrats music! rock musicians should know their place!” and “oh, well, williams scored it, so lets nominate him! aw, just give him the goddamn oscar. i liked it ten years ago, i love it now! it’s classic!” you are insulting the red boy who is a member of the academy! these games you play are all in your head! these people who say bad @!#$ are not important. (actually, the oscars aren’t really crucial to the fate of the earth..) next time we call them retards, let’s be specific about who.
um. sorry. i know that future topics will require the same speech, but i though i was old enough to give it a shot.

GuestWell lexi, you have a point, because I didn’t know that composers nominated composers. Oh well. In any case, Elfman really should get more recognition. And yes Nat, you can like Williams, he is just not my cup-o-tea (thats right, you have my permission lmao). I just think he needs to come up with some new ideas. As for Horner, like I said, I love his score to Bicentennial Man, but I still think he is a retard for using the same piece in A Beautiful Mind (not matter how he orchestrated it differently). Other people high on my list include: Hans Zimmer, James Newton Howard, Rachel Portman, Howard Shore, ect. So don’t think that I don’t like Williams stuff because I only like Elfman. And the dead-girl really has a point, even some of the most famous composers of all time were never givin’ a second glance until they were dead. I am just glad that there are quite a few people out there who love Danny’s music as much as I do!

GuestWell lets see Danny haven`t won any oscars for his scores so why not makes some (oingo boingo influenced) songs to his movies too. James Horner had one song with the rest of the score on such soundtracks as: Titanic, A Beautiful Mind, Bicentennial Man, Zorro and others so why not let him make a song or two and then i promise you that they will recognise his work as they should (at least after some years).
Ps. Scoring a blockbuster after a blockbuster after a blockbuster after a blockbuster wouldn`t hurt either
November 25, 2002 at 7:39 pm #43102Anonymous
Guest…no comment. (My fists are tightening – just take the hint, lol.)
November 26, 2002 at 12:19 am #43103Anonymous
GuestNever would fly, because Boingo is not Enya or Deon lmao. Besides, I would lose alot of respect for Danny if he did that, as would alot of his fans. I feel the anger Michael, but I am trying to say this in a nice calm matter.

GuestDidn’t Danny compose songs to movies in the 80’s – how many people remember his work for Bachelor Party? Great “fun” songs that had no real purpose to serve; you don’t have to be all serious all of the time (that’s where I lose a lot of the classical purist – chill out). And his Floop Song was refreshing to hear. I’ll support any road Danny chooses to take, because he rarely, if ever, lets me down.

Paid for by the campaign of “those who love Danny, Boingo, and everything Elfman”!

GuestNat,
Do you remember “Happy” from Summer School?
That’s a great ditty.-beth
November 26, 2002 at 4:30 am #43111Anonymous
GuestI agree Nat, but he was talking about those songs like the one in Titanic, the ones that play directly across the mainstream and all the krap. I am not too fond of exploitation. But as for Elfman, I doubt he would do that anyways. All of his music is really his music, he doesn’t try to rip someone off or write what is “popular” at the time, but what is appropriate. The album Boingo is a great example, because that is all Danny, as with all his stuff. It wasn’t what was popular, but it was awesome.

GuestBeth (and Nat, whomever remembers “Summer School”) –
Ah yes, I love that tune! Woo for “Happy!”

GuestI also saw “Summer School” and “Bachelor Party,” not to mention “Back to School” all in the summer I lived at my grandmother’s and catalogued the cemetary plots. (And Bachelor Party’s title track has definitely grown on me…seriously, my granny owns a mortuary – it’s kind of the “family business”) Don’t ask me how, but I just remembered this all right now when listening to “Happy” in the midst of grading term papers.
