GuestSo, I got an early copy of Red Dragon last night, and must say that I am very pleased. I’m gonna agree agree with John Mullin’s summery and say that yes, it’s unlike any Elfman score. Take one part Doloras Claiborne, a pinch of extreme measures, and add some dark, operectic, yet tender moments. Not to mention some really great string work. The cd is also enhanced with a picture gallery, the trailer, but the greatest part is an interview with Brett Ratner, Anthony Hopkins, and Danny Elfman ON THE SCORING STAGE! The greatest quote is from Anthony Hopkins, “I love music, I love watching the orchestra play, and I love watching Danny Elfman do his thing.”

GuestYeah, I enjoyed the interview
Not enough shots of the musicians, not enough Danny Elfman talking . . . grumble . . . but it was nice.September 24, 2002 at 8:58 pm #42252Anonymous
Guestdamn. I live in Europe and the EXCHANGE probably won’t carry the cd for a few days (OR WEEKS!!!). I’m looking forward to hearing it in full though.
Ryan, you could make those interview files REAL VIDEO and put them up here, couldn’t you?

GuestIt reminds me a lot of “The Ninth Gate” score…a lot of Kilar’s Dracula in there, too. I enjoy it: it’s dark and brooding, and near Halloween time…what else can I say? Perfect, and the Main Titles are great. I take it that Dobbs didn’t care for it? Ah well, to each his own. To be quite honest, I’m listening to a lot more Nyman now than the Elf. Beat me, if you must, but we all change…

GuestOne of my favorite Danny Elfman quotes, brought to mind by that Hopkins quote:
“For someone who’s completely deaf, he’s (Tim) extraordinarily talented. He likes to watch the musicians as they play and depending on how they look when they play, he’ll decide that it’s ok.”
-HBO making of Edward Scissorhands
may not be word for word, but it’s close.

GuestI just got the CD today from Decca (thanks!) and will be adding as much info as I can tonight (not a lot of time, plus THE OSBOURNES is on [yes, it’s just starting in Canada]).
I’ll see what I can do about the vid clip, but no promises!

NP: RED DRAGON, “Main Titles”September 25, 2002 at 4:16 am #42262Anonymous
GuestI’ve only listened to it all the way through once, but there is some GREAT work in this one. After the first listen I’m not ready to put this score over Spiderman as the best of the year, but it is definitely 2nd – with repeated listening it might beat out the web slinger! Of my favorite tracks, I count:
9. Enter the Dragon
12. Love On a Couch
16. He’s Back!
17. End Credits Suite – this one caught my attention so much that I had to play it again. Elfman does it again, he takes the score and turns it on it’s head for the End Credits – a wonderful track.Erika, if your listening to Nyman (if you don’t have them already) please try his concert works MGV and his Concerto album that includes his double concerto for Cello and Sax, Harpsichord Concerto, and Trombone Concerto. As for his film scores I love his work for Peter Greenaway (a good rerecorded compilation is The Essential Michael Nyman Band), 6 Days 6 Nights, and from his recent works Wonderland. Also his work with Damon Albarn on Ravenous was something that made me take notice when I saw it in the theater (that’s right, I was the one person that saw it).
Nat who will be listening to the Red Dragon CD a lot over the next week.
