GuestI’m looking into the validity of this Elfman interview that apparently is in an international (!!?!?) version of ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY magazine.
Before you cancel your subscription, I’d wait to see if this is legit.

Guest‘Red Dragon’? More like Red Herring!
Is this the title of the article or something? . . . Whaaat? You got me curious!!! lol
July 9, 2002 at 9:24 am #40776Anonymous
GuestThe Red Herring refers to the Article and how it might not be what it seems.
July 9, 2002 at 10:56 am #40777Anonymous
GuestOh…so the guy’s not doing Red Dragon?
July 9, 2002 at 1:22 pm #40780Anonymous
GuestThe article might not be real. A Red Herring is a term that designates a “decoy” or false lead. Hence the article for Red Dragon might be a Red Herring (it is a play on words that Ryan cleverly chose to use).
I hope that clears it up for any international friends.

GuestOh geez . . . that would be a major bummer . . . thanks for checking this out, Ryan.
July 9, 2002 at 9:44 pm #40784Anonymous
Guestso is that supposed to mean he’s not scorig the movie now, or he’s not scoring the movie at all?
July 10, 2002 at 12:33 am #40785Anonymous
GuestHe is still scoring the movie, the whole Red Herring deal is only regarding the magazine article.

GuestSheesh! You people have short term memories!!
Thanks, Nat — for at least remembering!

GuestNo problem, I find it quite amusing myself. I just want to help out any way I can.

Guesthuh, never knew that.

GuestNot that it matters to me (not a huge Hannibal Lecter fan), but once you start the ball rolling on the disinformation it just gets bigger and bigger. Hence my question on his choice of work, since he was so detailed about it in the fake article.

GuestBUMMER!
Hey, to brighten this up a little, there’s a soundtrack CD cover and a track listing for Red Dragon on a different thread. Check it out!

GuestOh man, double bummer!
July 12, 2002 at 12:38 am #40825Anonymous
GuestWatch out Erika . . . I don’t think that people who don’t understand the term “red herring” (let alone the idea that the interview and artwork might not be legitimate) would know what a lobotomy is. Be prepared to do a lot of explaining.
BTW, did you ever listen to the crappy little Incantation and Dance clips? I never heard back from you about that.

GuestInfynitie, how true, but I hope the people who didn’t know what “Red Herring” meant, were just unfamiliar with American expressions… or at least I hope that is why, I didn’t mind explaining it, because I took that into consideration (If I belittled anyone I’m sorry — I tried to do it without hurting anyone).

GuestHm…I dew not nnow this “Reid Haerring.” Please explain… Haha…just kidding. I guess I should not comment on the “Red Herring” miscommunication, as I’m the student newspaper advisor at my place of employment, and really should know things like that. But yes, Nat, thank you for explaining to those who weren’t sure of it’s meaning. (Again, nothing offensive meant by that…especially the furst liine…it’s just me having fonnettick funn) *Grins*
Infynitie – no, I actually never received the clips. I’d still like to hear them. Would you be able to email the clips to me at elb1351@nebrwesleyan.edu? (That’s really my primary email address, and it should go through there). If it doens’t work, no problem…

GuestI’m just gonna post here because there IS some slight Danny Elfman relevance (Incantation and Dance sounds like a cross between Elfman and Williams to me). I put the clips on my website so I can just give you the link – – it’s much lower quality, but also much easier. It was a crappy concert (way back in the day . . . like in March), but meh . . . what can ya do . . . Incantation is the second piece you’ll hear. I’ve also got a clip with Fantasy Variations on a Theme of Niccolo Paganini (which immediately struck me as very Elfmanesque), but unless somebody speaks up and says they want to hear it, I’ll only post this one.

I was so out of tune with the bass clarinets it’s embarassing.

GuestHm…strikes me as more Williams than anything, a lot like “The Cowboys,” really, but that’s just my opinion. I’d like to hear the Theme of Niccolo Paganini…never heard that one before. Thanks for posting it, though. I enjoyed it immensely!

GuestNo prob. Yeah, definitely evocative of Williams. I can’t help thinking of The Lost World when I hear that piece. Have you ever played the band arrangement of The Cowboys?? I’ve sightread it in a local community band; haven’t really done much more with it than that, but it’s fun.
I’m warning you . . . this was unquestionably our crappiest concert of the year. Seriously, I felt like throwing up the first time I heard the CD, I was that embarassed. I apologized to my parents for having to hear it. While you hear a lot of me in this clip, I must warn you . . . I suddenly got very sick and I couldn’t breathe, I was playing on a crappy, cracked reed, I was crying the whole way through the second piece you hear in the clip, I’m always disgustingly flat, and then of course there’s that only-been-playing-for-a-matter-of-months-and-never-had-a-lesson deal (I’m happy though cuz I’m gonna start getting lessons soon!).
http://members.tripod.com/infynitie/summerconcert.mp3 . . . sorry about the very low audio quality
The first clip is Fantasy Variations (I know it sounds like I screwed up really bad at 0:53, but I swear that wasn’t me!), the second one is An American Elegy (by FRANK TICHELI!!! This piece means the world to me and it’s made the entire band cry . . . it was written to honor the victims and survivors of the Columbine shootings . . . as many sappy feelings as I have about this piece, I need to smack the guy that was on timpani), the third is The Minstrel Boy by Leroy Anderson, and the fourth is The Rakes of Mallow by Leroy Anderson.
If you ever hear complete recordings of Fantasy Variations, you’ll know what I’m talking about with the Elfmanesque deal. It’s got that whole dark funk vibe going on through most of it, except for this kind of irritating “nice” part in the middle that you hear. It’s not Elfmanesque because it’s “nice”, it’s not Elfmanesque because it just ISN’T. :-p

GuestInfynitie – I adored “American Elegy.” Simply wonderful! I really must find a recording of that…know where I could find one/get a copy? Ticheli is phenomenal. Now, if only I could introduce you and/or others to the wonderful world of Rolf Rudin as well as that of Johan de Meij (a few on this board are aware of de Meij)…
