GuestHello all.
Just a quick note to let you all know that the UK movie magazine TOTAL FILM has a review of the RED DRAGON score in it’s latest issue (70 – page 144)
They give it only three (3) stars out of five (5) and round off the short, fairly negative review with this :
“Good, but by no means great, Elfman’s score lacks the menace or diversity to keep you engaged for its full 57 minute run-time …”
by Richard Brooks *** (three stars)
Hmmm… not sure what to make of this. From what I’ve heard of it on the clips, the score is MUCH better than this guy seems to think … but I guess I’ll wait until I hear the whole CD first and then decide.September 26, 2002 at 8:30 pm #42289Anonymous
GuestBull @!#$! Menace isn’t the only underlying emotion in RED DRAGON. I hate people who assume that the music doesn’t measure up when they haven’t even seen the movie. Red Dragon is a score that fits directly into the context of the film. This is something that every ELFMAN knows for a fact: This is a composer whose film compositions always match the TONE.
This is apparently a reviewer who was pigeon-holing the score far too much before he even heard it–one who was probably looking for another BATMAN with triumphant fanfare. This works differently and is just as genious.
If you ask me it’s best of 2002 (along side SIGNS and SPIDER-MAN).

GuestAgreed. I would have posted the whole review (it wasn’t ALL bad …), but work called so I just put the excerpt on there instead. A poor review, in more ways than one. I’ll still be buying (and loving) my copy ….

this is the kind of over-used sentences to say “well i don’t know what to think about it but I have to write something”.

Make a critic of a score, only a few days after his release make no sense ! And especially when it is so complex. - AuthorPosts
