    Hi–

I am a young composer currently attending Huntington High School in Huntington, NY. Our Drama Dept. seems pretty set on performing “The Nightmare Before Christmas” as our spring musical– even though the timing is off–, but we have been unable to find the score (for rental, we’re assuming). The entire student body is very much enthusiastic about performing this musical and adapting it to the stage, but we cannot proceed until we have at least written permission to use the score (we’re a non-profit organization– all ticket sales are used to fund future drama club productions) and information on how/where to rent it. From reading the other posts on this board, you all seem like knowledgable, passionate people when it comes to this stuff. We’d all really appreciate it at HHS if you could help us out. Thanks!

If you’re looking to aquire rights, you’ll have to talk to the Walt Disney Corp. I can’t tell you how to do that, but they own the rights to the property.

Currently there is no complete “book” of lyrics and music from NIGHTMARE beyond a song/piano version from HalLeonard.

That’s about all you’ve got to work with.

Too bad my school would never be cool enough to do Nightmare.

Right now they’re working on Les Mis, which is obviously going to be a disaster. Everyone’s really pissed off because they just cut about 8 people from the orchestra and replaced them with adults on keyboards. And yes, it sounds worse now than it did before.

Just curious, Jeremy. Does your school have any ideas for what to do with Zero? Any ideas for the spiral hill?

Please tell me that the creepy, bloody little duck will be included. That is the absolute best part of the movie.

((I’m going to try and make one late in the year if I can find the time . . . last year I made the man-eating wreath :-) ))

As a high school teacher, I always find the musical rather fun, even though my campaigns for something “darker” (a la Jekyll and Hyde, my most favorite Broadway musical) are always rejected. And I’ve made darn sure that we ALWAYS have a pit orchestra – there will be no keyboard ensembles while I’m around LHS! Live musicians – amateur or professional – do serve a purpose, folks. Ever heard “Jekyll and Hyde” done with a piano and a keyboard because the production company was too damned cheap to hire a full pit orchestra? I hope you never have to; it was one of the worst experiences of my life. Part of the charm of live musicals is that they take on the character of the musicians themselves; music being created right in front of you is…well, for me, it’s as close as I get to a religious experience. And cutting high school students from the orchestra to replace them with ADULTS on keyboards? Man, how sad! That’s a damn shame, Infynitie. You don’t become a musician by listening; you become one by playing. Whomever advocated the geriatric keyboardists should be severely beaten. Hope the bassoon is still going well for you, and that pep band season worked out for the best…

    Best wishes,
    E

What if you have to do the musical “The War Of The Worlds”? It was written for just keyboards. Also, not to be too picky, but isn’t a keyboardist a “live” musician?

    Just having some fun.
