I hear some Shostakovich-like harmonic movement in Elfman’s music. I am curious…who are some of Elfman’s strongest influences??

Bernard Herrmann, Nina Rota, Duke Ellington, Stravinsky, ect. ect. Never heard the name “Shostakovich” come up before though.

Knight (BTW, have any of you seen the trailer or the teaser to The Pianist? The music in that was so stunning, and it was only the trailer. I have regained my respect for Kilar even after his disappointing Ninth Gate score. I wore a tuxedo like that, except it was yellow.)

regained respect for Kilar after the Ninth Gate? You’re nuts. Danny’s put out some less than stellar stuff MIB2 and Flubber come to mind….Wojciech Kilar is like the Jerry Goldsmith or John Williams of Europe…I don’t think think that’s a reasonable statement. He’s got a resume much longer and more prestigious than maybe all those guys. And he does something none of them do….his own orchestrations.

Hey! It was only my opinion! I thought The Ninth Gate left something to be desired! Don’t acually take that as I hated the score or something. Besides, I have heard John Williams do the same thing (in my opinion).

Knight (MIB2 and Flubber where both awesome scores in my book)

MIB2 was pretty bad, but Flubber is way underrated.

I thought the MOVIE MIIB was bad (worse than that…it was terrible), but the SCORE was pretty cool.

Knight (Pray lets stop with all these boring sequels)

As far as I know, Shostakovich was a big influence on Danny. Correct me, someone, if I’m wrong…

-E (who thinks The Ninth Gate AND Bram Stoker’s Dracula are great “idea” movies and absolutely LOVELY scores)
