GuestI just bought the Signs soundtrack (the one with the bonus score mixes on it (that i don’t really care for anyway). I am shocked at how “Elfman” it sounded. It sounded early Elfman too, like J.N. Howard had been listening to Dolores Claiborne over and over again.
I am amazed. This is by far the best score to come out of 2002 (until RED DRAGON comes out, that is).
P.S. Did anyone Else think PSYCHO with the opening fiddle scratches? I love that stuff.

GuestWell, Signs has been better than alot of recent Elfman scores imo, including Spiderman. I just didn’t want to say anything here, because I KNOW I’d get bashed upside the head with a frying pan. . . and probably die. . .
It DOES sound like Elfman’s early stuff. Kinda’ like an Elfman/Howard colaboration. Cool stuff!

GuestWell at least Spider-Man doesn’t play the same 2 notes repeated over 70 minutes of score.

Guest2 notes? Man, I NEVER noticed! They must be the most beautiful notes I’ve ever heard in my life!

Guesti guess if you’re into moody scores, then it’s for you, but that whole long drawn out score like the Sixth Sense and Unbreakable i’m not into right now, if at all anymore. There’s like a time and a place for that kinda stuff….i dont’ have that frame of mind at the present time.

Guesttwo notes, huh? Jaws was all about two notes and it’s, by many, considered one of the best scores ever written.

GuestJaws best score ever written?! UGH! Who would EVER think that!?
August 19, 2002 at 6:32 pm #41385Anonymous
GuestI love the Signs score!! Where can I find a copy of it WITH the remixes? I know they’re available online, but if they’re available on a pressed disc, I want it!
So are they just available at one particular chain or stores or what?? or are they just not listed on the packaging but are on all the discs??August 19, 2002 at 9:43 pm #41387Anonymous
Guestdude i really don’t see whats the big deal about this cd…id listen to Jaws before i listen to signs
August 19, 2002 at 11:39 pm #41390Anonymous
Guestif you like elfman that you’de like signs. That’s the big deal. JAWS was famous because it was so simple. I feel that that this will be the same with SIGNS. There is that MAIN THEME that keeps appearing throughout the weird scenes and those fiddles that keep pulsating to make the mood more intense.
It was an OMAGE to Bernard Herrmann (PSYCHO) and John Williams (CLOSE ENCOUNTERS), according to the DIRECTOR of the film. And Wasn’t Herrmann Elfman’s idol? Yes… I believe he was.
So If you don’t think this score is reminiscant of ELFMAN [or HERRMANN] than I must ask what you have been smoking? AND If you hate this CD so much, it being so reminiscant of Elfman, then why the hell are you even at this site bitching about it?
I suggest that You should be on your knees sucking James Newton Howard’s toes!

PS: I bought the CD with the bonus tracks at AAFES. The cover and everything’s the same as the normal version. The track alterations appear inside the CD booklet it’s self aswell as (duh) on the DISK. Thank god, though, there’s only ONE Paul Oakenfold MIX on it. The rest are acceptable (I suppose).

Guestdude i heard that signs sounds like that one Twilight Zone Movie episode about the gremlin on the plane..with the fiddles? is that what you mean?
August 21, 2002 at 12:19 am #41412Anonymous
GuestActually, the whole score isn’t composed of two notes. It’s composed of THREE notes. A note above Jaws! HA! Take THAT dobbs! You HAVE to be convinced NOW!

Guestcan’t fight that. simplistic is in now.

GuestI really liked the score… was awesome… and yes Jaws is one of the best and most influential scores ever written. AND there is nothing wrong with weaving a tapestry of music from a small idea be it 2 or 3 notes, I can think of a certain composer’s fifth symphony. Anyway, I find it very interesting how Howard used the same motif in a frightening and sometimes beautiful way. However, something was wrong with the opening credits, not the music, the music was great. But the actual titles that were on the screen were to bland to go along with the music. The music had all of this motion but the titles just sat there
My two cents…

GuestThe score itself was decent – not horrifically annoying, but not “hey, I’m going to go out and buy this!” It’s far too reminiscent of “Psycho” for me to be considered anything more than “decent.”

Guest“two notes, huh? Jaws was all about two notes and it’s, by many, considered one of the best scores ever written.”
Yeah, the Jaws theme was 2 notes but the rest of the score has melodies, sub-themes and pirate music.
The score to Sings is great but aside from the main title theme it’s a bit shallow in the re-play department compared to Jaws, Spiderman or especially Psycho. Psycho just pumps along with intense melodies and unnerving strings. Sings is exciting for 3 tracks and then wallows somewhat.

GuestNAh. i’m not convinced.

GuestI loved the creepy flutes in Signs. Almost liked it better than A simple plan. Why isn’t James Newton Howard a more popular composer?
August 21, 2002 at 5:26 pm #41434Anonymous
GuestToo bad the Jaws theme isn’t original. It’s stolen from an old song. I’ll let everyone know who it is if I get any reply to this.
August 21, 2002 at 6:34 pm #41435Anonymous
GuestSigns may not of had subthemes but there were many [“MANY”] motifs employed that worked just as well.
August 21, 2002 at 10:15 pm #41447Anonymous
GuestI got an idea. Everyone who doubts this score, go download an MP3 of the track “Hand Of Fate #1” from Kazaa or something. IM-PRESS-IVE!

Guest“It’s stolen from an old song.”
If the song isn’t orchestral with intense stings I’m going to be very upset.
