GuestI’m happy to say that I live in NEW YORK and have had the privilidge to have seen a screening for RED DRAGON [with nearly half the population of the city crammed into one theatre]. I thought I’d tell you guys what I think [of the movie] since I’m somewhat of an Elfman Nerd, myself. It is much better than HANNIBAL and, in my opinion, is on the same level with LAMBS. Both films have their good elements, and that makes it hard to choose. In Red Dragon the violence is low, like in a Hitchcock movie (except for maybe some crime scene photos and a guy who is set on fire). Ed Norton is much better than I’d have ever expected him to be and Ralf Feinnes is so much better a villain than the androgynous BUFFALO BILL guy was in LAMBS. You actually begin to look past the VERY UN-COUTH stuff this guy does and feel for him. He actually tries to stop; in one scene he has a kind of humorous schizo attack and fight with himself–kinda weird. The Ending was kind of a twist but set up for LAMBS very well, I suppose. I’m not going to tell you anything more than that . If you email me though, I’ll spill the beans personally for you (if you want to know).
Oh Yeah…
THE MUSIC FITS the MOVIE very well and, in my opinion, sounded like a hybred between the scores of HANNIBAL and LAMBS with ELFMAN’s unique style injected within. The HOWARD SHORE woodwind Motif is very noticable [at least in the final film] and the overall quality can be either seen as extremely western european or extremely liberal. There are just enough midi samples to make you briefly think of the HANNIBAL movie (without thinking of how inferior it was).Oh, and Just so you guys know, the MAIN TITLES, the film version, sound a little bit different than the CD (there’s briefly a children’s choir inserted in beginning during the harp plucks).

So, all in all, This CD is now at top of my score collection. The movie’s already my favorite of 2002.

GuestI agree with you, Mr. FREKE!
Although the version I saw two weeks ago unfortunately didn’t have the entire score up yet, so I have to wait until it’s released on the 4th, but the movie itself is incredible. And the BEST part is indeed how they set it up for Silence of the Lambs… it just makes you go.. “ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!! Cool!” There of course, are some really great Creepy Hanniblisms that are so genuine, priceless… and just when you think… ahhh I won’t SPOIL IT! Just Look OUT! Behind YOU!
I still think the Lambs is the best, and Hannible will go down in shame, because Red Dragon is indeed on the top of the list for best so far, this year.

GuestSo are we talking Oscar worthy good… like maybe another nomination for Danny, because of the prestige of the film?
Or is it stub-city again. Personally I think he should be nominated twice this year for Spiderman and Red Dragon. But we all know how often Elfman has gotten shafted.
How about acting wise, are there any Great performances that might draw Academy attention more to this movie. I’m hoping, that with more Oscar buzz surrounding this movie, that Danny will be recognized once again, because twice (for MIB and Good Will Hunting) is not enough.
Nat (who is even more jazzed about seeing this film, thanks guys)

Guestlet’s see.. I’m thinking.. magically ‘Signs’ will be nominated in the music category, (this is a definite ONLY if Jaws got away with it in it’s time. Did Jaws get nominated? If Jaws did with it’s 2 notes, than Signs can kick ass with 3.) If we’re lucky, we’ll see Red Dragon-boy hit the score board (or envelope sorting thingy) with at least Spider-man. We fought so hard to get it released as a soundtrack. Who else? Hmm.. did John Williams do anything this year? if so.. give him an Oscar and end it. I would laugh if Signs won because it’s such a simple score, but really a scary one! You should have seen me jump out of my skin while listening to it at borders!
lexi: then i was almost arrested for exposing my lungs to the public.

GuestAs for what might be nominated, my guesses are:
1. The Four Feathers (Horner)- if the film gets any kind of Oscar push
2. Catch Me If You Can (Williams) – same here
3. Signs (Howard)
4. Road to Perdition (Thomas Newman)
5. Red Dragon (or Spiderman) – mostly wishful thinking right nowThis is not what I want to see neccissarily, but just a prediction.
Some things are left to be seen, but right now that’s my guesses.
Considering how much “original” music is in the Two Towers score it might get up there (remember Empire Strikes Back was nominated). There are a few other scores left to see the light, so really this is my Oscar list for now, nothing more.
Nat
And Lexi, Jaws was not only nominated, but it won.

GuestI hope Signs wins, or Red Dragon wins. I J.W. wins again, I’ll gag myself.

Guestwhoa! I forgot the ‘road to perdition’ that was a big flick right? i didn’t see it. you know what I think? I think they don’t really care what the music is, they just honor the runner-up or winner for ‘best picture.’ it’s like, ‘well, here’s a doorstop for your trouble.’ bloomin imbeciles. oh by the way, nat, did pleasentville win best score? I rather liked that one.
“And Lexi, Jaws was not only nominated, but it won.”
see, I had a feeling that had happened, but not the knowledge. in conclusion, signs will probably win because:
1. it’s a very neve-racking, infuential score
2. jaws got away with it.
3. red dragon-boy is constantly whining that the academy don’t like him.lexi: well, i have emetophobia. so if john williams wins, i’ll probably find something more constructive to do.. perhaps a voodoo doll crafts project..
p.s: i hope erika reads this part, because it will basically get ignored if she doesn’t:
i was telling my friend about the dream i had when i fell asleep listening to red dragon, and I finished my story with, “.. and I wouldn’t have had this dream if i hadn’t been sleeping with red dragon.. (pause) ..on.” this is how i came up with elfman’s new moniker. by golly! red dragon is a euphemism!p.s.s: can anyone tell me how to pronounce the name, Raspail?

GuestLexi,
“Pleasantville” didn’t win Randy Newman an Oscar, he was awarded his only one for the song in Monster’s Inc. (he has been nominated 15 times). As for your theory about the winning score, it might be true, but did you know that the composers and songwriters are the ones that actually nominate? – Then the whole Academy votes for the winner.
Nat (just dispensing some info)

Guest“but did you know that the composers and songwriters are the ones that actually nominate? – Then the whole Academy votes for the winner.”
what do you mean?
lexi: so very.. confused..
September 27, 2002 at 4:07 am #42309Anonymous
GuestThe members of the Academy that are Composers and Songwriters do the nominating in the score and song categories, but once there are the 5 choices, then the whole Academy votes for the winner. It’s like that in every category – like all the directors pick the nominations in the director category, and so forth.
Understand now?
Nat who does nothing but confuse.

Guestah.. I get it.. so.. is john williams a member of the academy?
lexi: hint hint nudge nudge
*couph* couph* *conform**couph*p.s: how do you pronounce the name, ‘Raspail’?

GuestLexi- that’s a mighty interesting moniker you’ve given to the Elf – ha! I…prefer not to think about THAT sort of red dragon…I think I’ll just wait for the movie
Besides, having red hair does not denote any sense of his level of…uh…performance. Sorry if I’ve disillusioned you.BTW, does anybody else think that Danny’s head looks really small in the Red Dragon video clip? Either that, or he has really wide shoulders…just that his head looked abnormally small. *Gasp of alarm as hand slaps forehead in realization* That darn witch doctor got to him, didn’t she? (In Beetlejuice, the witch doctor WAS a “she,” wasn’t it?)
