Guestwell, i know i’m a year late one this one, but i just now saw harry potter and the philosopher’s stone on hbo. and there just two things i want to say of the score:
it reminds me a bit of hook. i think it still works, though.
the two themes i liked were the main title bits and the sort of feminine potter emo theme. uh.. that’s the theme that was playing when harry was saying goodbye to hagrid on his way onto the train. it played in a million other spots, but thinking isn’t my strong point right now.
john williams may have been following a fill-in-the-blank tablet for scoring, but even that requires originality. he made an adorable foundation for a seven-film series.lexi: a little late, i know. perhaps i’ll see the new one tomorrow.. and i still have yet to see red dragon! erg!

GuestCorrection: I think it’s “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” “The Philosopher’s Stone” is a fairly new wind band work by Thomas C. Duffy, and a very excellent one at that!
All in good fun, L

GuestI am now the personification of .001% of the population who has no interest in Harry Potter at all….I mean, there could be kids–or even infants–in those theatres! (Now that scares me)!

GuestNot much of a fan of Potter, myself. My niece forced me to go to last year’s offering, here’s hoping she doesn’t beg for this one, too. Better reading = Brian Jacques’ “Redwall” series, that’s all the input I have on that topic.

GuestAnything that makes kids WANT to read is a good thing!
Also the correct title of the book is “Philosopher’s Stone”; it was changed to “Sorcerer’s Stone” only in America (for book and movie) – where I guess we are too dumb to know what the alchemist were trying to achieve? On a personal note, I wrote a Tuba Sonata called “Alchemy” whose movements were entitled:
I. Mercury – “Mystery of Creation”
II. Sulfur – “The Devil’s Brimstone”
III. Search for the “Philosopher’s Stone”Nat who takes every opportunity to self-promote himself

Guest*Swallowing her pride* Thanks, Nat, for the correction. Didn’t realize it was renamed in the US. It makes a lot more sense as “The Philosopher’s Stone” than as “The Sorcerer’s Stone.” Yes, I’ll agree that anything that makes kids want to read is a good thing, but Harry Potter…ah well, I’ll just drop it.

Guestto nat: you were supposed to just smile and nod! let her believe what she wants!
erika: the sad thing is the people who think they are acomplished readers for reading the 700 pages in the fourth book. quantity! quantity!

GuestOh, c’mon guys, I’ll admit when I’m wrong; really, I have no qualms doing so, although it *is* embarrassing
700 pages, you say? Wow, and I thought Jacques was hefty (in terms of kids’ lit) at 400+ pages in most of his hardbound editions! Ignorance is NOT bliss, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise…education is the gateway to freedom! *Stepping off social issues soapbox now**Telling Lexi otherwise*: But ignorance IS bliss… *Grins*

GuestOne of my students is supposedly sexually obsessed with the kid that plays Harry Potter. Evidently he watched The Chamber of Secrets on opening night, and kept saying “I want to hit it with that adorable little boy.” A bit disturbing, since he called the kid who plays Harry Potter an “adorable little boy.” (I came by this information when I was having a writing conference with one of his friends, who was rather disturbed by it).
-E (Danny in the mid-late 80s…dishy beyond compare! Wow, I cannot wait to see the videos…ah yes, all that red-fro-and-suspenders goodness

Guesta friend of mine has a bit of a thing for the potter boy, but not only is she only 15, but she saw him being 13 as a setback. personally, i think the boy needs to change his hair style. maybe to have the 4th book cover’s semi-acceptable hair.. (i donno what i’m talking about..)
and speaking of hair.. ack! no afro danno! no no no!
lexi: who spent the last 5 minutes typing about hair and is once again worried about where her topic page may end up.

GuestUm….you people have problems….
Yeah, I can understand about you obsessing about Elfman’s music, it’s awesome, more than awesome, but telling him how to do his hair? That’s like telling Peter Jackson to comb his, or Tim Burton to cut his, come on people.Knight (Who is very happy having long long hair)
November 21, 2002 at 1:03 am #43018Anonymous
Guestoh, come on. it’s only me! and how could you think it’s alright to obsess about elfman?
lexi: who has short black hair with natuaral red highlights.
November 21, 2002 at 3:33 am #43020Anonymous
Guestshort black hair with natuaral red highlights?!? Ooooh! And I never said anything about it being ok to obsess about Elfman, only his music (and I think everyone who posts here is)!
Knight (I’m a guy so my long hair is special! lmao)

GuestSince we’re talking about it, I have short, spikey blonde hair. I usually dye it red, but I’ve kept it my natural blonde color for the past month (I HATE having blonde hair) because I don’t have the money to waste on hair dye right now. I have a huge weakness for redheads
Hooray for Knight and his special long hair…-E (“But I never intended all this madness, never!” – Jack Skellington)

GuestSweet! Keep it blonde! Nothing is bettter than natural color. Just imagine if Danny decided he wanted to have brown hair instead of red…that would just not be cool!!!
Knight (Who is obsessed with hair)

GuestI have long brown hair–but it’s naturally curly, and I hate it! (It always always always looks like I just got a damned perm). The color I can deal with, but the curls have got to go, baby!
So if you have super-long, straight hair–then I am envious of you, as well!
(Wishing I had prettier hair than some guy….)
