GuestBlah, blah, blah…
Though I loved FRIDA – FAR FROM HEAVEN was far from as great as everyone says it is. Where’s Danny? Oh yeah…..big surprise.

Guest“Where’s Danny?” He’s off somewhere laughing uncontrollably at the utter bullsh|t this list of nominees for best score represents.

GuestI’m at least glad to see two of my top 5 on the list, with two I’ve yet to hear. I won’t pass any full judgments until I’ve heard those, but I’m happy with Far from Heaven and The Hours (one of the best scores this year). Let us not forget that it was the Golden Globes that gave Danny a nomination for a Nightmare Before Christmas song, when the Oscars neglected to even recognize it.
Frida is the only head-scratcher for me right now (but I have yet to see it with the film). The score is an acquired taste of Mexican guitar and orchestra that is far beyond the orchestral depictions of Copland (one of Goldenthal’s teachers). I have nothing but respect for Goldenthal, Glass, and Bernstein – and if any of them win then I’ll be OK with it. Then again, for my money, the best score this year was Spider-man.

GuestI think it’s an odd list…I mean, I’m a philip glass fan bigtime, and he has actually done a huge body of filmwork, and he did get recognized by the golden globes…so I’m excited for the Hours, and Frida is a nice score too. But I don’t know, I mean this list seems to esoteric…I mean where are the scores from people who are actual film composers? PETER GABRIEL? Berstein’s almost out of the game..dunno

GuestJohn Williams can break wind and get nomintated. I’m glad to see his lack of pressence……

Guestagreed, John Williams can put a walk through the motions score on the table and it’s immediately loved and embraced as great no matter what. But I mean, GOldsmith has been snubbed pretty much, and I think Nemesis is a fine score…
I just noticed the lack of anyone who is usually mentioned in film music circles. Like I said, I like philip glass, but most, including himself don’t consider him a film composer. I guess I’m making the argument for film music as an entity unto itself, and the creators and believers in it, people like Goldmsith, who is as big as any other (with the possible exception of WIlliams), go unrewarded. Film music isn’t classical music, and it’s not theater music, it’s film music. Giants like Elfman and Zimmer despite having the resources and possibilities to do their own projects, have chosen to be film composers, it’s their calling. Their world. Berstein has paid his dues, but he’s fading…and other people are coming in…people who are making great music. I don’t know…I am just tired of fighting for people to gt more respect, and I think part of the reason why williams gets nominated no matter what, is because he’s afforded more respect for his work outside the cinema (i.e. concert performances, concert pieces-concertos etc-)..I want people who have grown up liking film music for what it is, and what purpose it serves, to be someday rewarded for creating viable art.December 27, 2002 at 4:48 pm #43517Anonymous
GuestHey, Peter Gabriel is a fine film composer (“Last Temptation of Christ”, “Birdy”… and “Rabbit Proof Fence” is great too). And if the problem is his work in rock music, remember that Elfman was working in rock music when he started composing for film…

GuestPeter “sledgehammer” Gabriel composes film scores? Wow…who’da thunk it? Evidently not me! Lol…
