TheLastSlasherStanding
ParticipantSo the movies out and its doing big big business…and I was really concerned about the score. Would weaving Elfman’s themes into a new score work? The answer is yes and no.
The Main Titles is retained, but remixed with the themes for both new villains represented. The Venom theme works, the Sandman theme not so much. Venom’s theme is written in the Elfman vein, but Sandman’s sounds a little too Goldenthal or Goldsmith, but still has a hint of “Planet of the Apes” in its blunt percussiveness. (Note: The Main Title sequence is visually stunning and the way Young transitions from Sandman’s theme back to the Spider-Man theme is pretty sweet.)
Sandman’s theme is given a very sad interpretation after hes first transformed and hes trying to grab something but can’t. The music is very very dramatic and sad, and at first listen I was wondering “Ok where is this going?” but as the scene went on I understood and it worked very well.
One glaring difference is the lack of the final swing…its what I (and I’m sure most of you) was/were hoping to see…and they freakin’ screwed us out of it. I was wicked pissed. Other than that, Young’s score is good, if a little too optimistic at some points, sounding a little too upbeat.
Harry has a little bit of a motif of his own. Its dark and brooding, but not in an Elfmanesque way…still good though. The song Mary Jane sings in the show is really nice, I don’t know if its like an old song but I liked it…even though that wasn’t Kirsten Dunst singing it lol.
The love theme is retained in Young’s score but he does some interesting new things with it and there are some comedic bits where the score gets a little quirky and funky (you’ll see what I mean), but I can only liken them to the Costume Montage and Special Delivery cues from the first and second movies in their sheer departure from the seriousness of the material for a mere moment of fun.
Out of 10, the score gets a 7.5.

KeymasterPsst… All of the SM3 discussion is in the Elfman/Young SM3 thread.
