Maybe I am just a freak on this, but I thought they might have (in thier long-list of thank yous) given a short little prop to Elfman’s score, but, of course, they didn’t. One thing I am kindof getting tired of is these people making these “Soundtrack” albums with a bunch of songs that where not in the film. I really think that if they had Elfman’s score and that one song “Hero”, it still might have won, and therefor Danny would have won an American Music Award for the Best Soundtrack (which would, I think, be the first time that would have happened for the acual score of a film). Well, that’s the pop-music awards for you.

    WOW,

I think that’s all I have to say really.

I totally agree with Knight. Imagine your dream of having your music on an actual film, let alone a soundtrack being released?

Now imagine all of that hard work you have put into making those themes and such.

Now imagine about 11 other songs being thrown into the soundtrack, most of them some crap you never even heard of … with just two of your pieces “thrown in.”

No wonder Eminem and the rest didn’t show up for this stuff.

    I don’t think Danny cares.

He’s taken a backseat to pop music since his early days of film scoring.

    See: Batman

    See: Dick Tracy

Backseat to (successful) but inherently crappy pop music.

    See: Oingo Boingo

“We know that a hero can save us?” Mmhm…I love it when pop music tries to get philosophical. That’s what I think is great about Boingo and Elfman: neither party takes (or in Boingo’s case, took) themself seriously.

Nowadays (because I’m such an “old timer”), the only bands that are keeping my faith in goofy pop music alive (in that barely-breathing-hanging-onto-life-by-a-nearly-severed-shoestring sense of the word) are Tenacious D and They Might Be Giants.

-E (who thinks Eminem’s lyrics “this looks like a job for me…we need a little controversy…the world would be so empty without me” are hilarious)

Elfman still collects royalties on every SPIDER-MAN soundtrack (the score album too) sold. So an award or high sales work well for him.

Those “soundtracks” that are really nothing more than various artists thrown together for no reason at all (especially when they have absolutely nothing to do with the film)….are not “really” soundtracks.

But I can’t mention what they’re called here, because it’ll all be all encrypted and such….

hehehe, well I find it weird that Elfman would get any royalties from the “Soundtrack” album that didn’t contain the score but hey, if Ryan says he does, I’ll believe him!

Knight, there were two Elfman tracks on the “soundtrack” album, meaning Elfman receives royalties for his contribution.

Of course, he is the only artist who receives royalties on the “score” album.

Forgive me, I haven’t watched awards shows religiously since the New Kids were on (I am 24, if you’re curious) Just the occasional show that promises a performance from the Goo Goo Dolls. But I thought that the awards shows kinda passed over Danny a lot? I know he doesn’t give a rat’s a$$ about critics, but I would find it severly un-nerving to be passed on something I believe in so much, or I wouldn’t have choosen it for a career… Anyways does anyone watch the Best Score award at all? I thought people just watch to see Brad Pitt’s a$$ and what designer who was wearing, blah blah blah. And what dress J-Lo taped to her body this time…

Sorry, that top part had no point at all… I am completely ill at these “soundtracks” that put rock stars on them just to sell. If you want people to appreciate the score to the movie scenes DON’T cover it up with the next flash in the pan Britney or Justin. Even Disney does it. Ever since Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, they have had some Grammy winner sing a radio version to sell as a single. What’s wrong with the movie version? I usually like that one more. At least with Treasure Planet Johnny Rzeznick’s song fit right into the film–his voice and all! I am glad to see that DVD extras are taking the time to talk to the Composer. Hopefully Joe Public Stupidhead will actually watch the extras about the score (though I doubt it). But if some directors want Danny or any other composer so badly on their film, they should at least be more open about it. Like at awards shows….(imagine this) ” Thank you Mr. Elfman for enhancing my film with your spellbinding score…” NOT HARD TO SAY THANK YOU. It’s just two words that can do so much for people’s awareness of the “other” things that happen in the movies. It should be for all parts of a movie “Thank you Ms. So-and-So for your superb costumes that added so much the movie” SEE? Not hard at all. But now I am just ranting on… Well if I had the money I would give my own shiny gold award to several people I think get overlooked too often. So there. I am done ranting. Thank you, and I’m sorry if it doesn’t make any sense. :)

Jo: I TOTALLY agree. Hell, if there are any other composers who post here, let’s all make a pact that if any of us win something, we will say thank you to Danny for being such a hugh influence on us! Now THAT would be cool!

In the few instances that I’ve won something for my compositions I have mentioned Danny Elfman as being more than just an influence, he is inspiration (and he is just one of many). But if you’re so concerned about Film Music not being recognized, compare it to modern classical or even most jazz for that matter, and it is given a lot of more ink and screen time. The only good award barometer you have for instrumental music (and music in general) is the Grammy, and all I can say there is that I’m glad they actually divide them into enough categories.

Jo Elfgirl, I think your first paragraph does have a point – because I’m sure that most viewers would just as well not see a composer get an award because usually their speeches aren’t the attention grabbing hysterics that actors give (one exception to this is Randy Newman’s great acceptance speech for best song last year) – did you see Goldenthal’s speech at the Golden Globes? It was (for lack of a better word) boring which just shows that it’s not about the award – watch him talk about music on the other hand, and he is full of passion.

    Just some random observations.

Well maybe the Elf will get a grammy for Spider-Man. I now have a reason to watch. UNLESS…the “Best Score” isn’t one of those awards that get shoved into “Let’s see some of tonight’s earlier winners before broadcast…” and flashes for two seconds after the “Best Polka Children’s album done by a duo or group or one-armed Polish shoemaker” is it? :) :) I want to see some Elf! AND I WANT TO SEE HIM WIN, DAMMIT! IT’S ABOUT FREAKING TIME! YOU HEAR ME ALL YOU GRAMMY PEOPLE???? GIVE HIM THE FREAKING THING ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry for more incomprehensible rants, Jo the little elfgirl
(and I apologize to any one-armed polish shoemakers out there that like polka for kids!) I just like some of the categories, they get a little too specific sometimes. :)

Nat: I would say that, but you know how people are. You say inspiration, they say you are copying. It’s all messed up.

Jo: We need more Elfman fans like you :D

Inspiration has nothing to do with the actual writing process though. I get inspiration from reading a book or viewing a painting. Inspiration is that small little voice in one’s mind that says, “CREATE at all cost!” It is not an influence it is the beginning of everything that is created – and that is why I don’t like to hear anyone put down anyone else who dose have this same feeling and sees it through by putting pen to paper, or brush to canvas. This is something that is very near, and dear to me. It’s both spiritual and therapeutic at the same time.

I hope I’m not coming off as some weirdo here?

I agree Nat, but people are stupid. Elfman says he was inspired by Herrmann, people say he copys him. Like I said, it’s all messed up.

That Nat, he’s such a weirdo! (Just kidding)….

Anyways, I believe in inspiration, too. I mean, everyone’s inspired by something, or someone–if they’re willing to admit it or not. The trick is, to pick up on something that’s saucy, and draw from it–not copy it.

I mean, if I hadn’t read great stories, or seen snazzy drawings, I wouldn’t have such an obsession with writing and drawing–and I’m thinking the same thing applies to other arts. I mean you hear or see something that’s so creative, you just sort of sit up and take notice, you dig?

And sometimes, even if something’s not so saucy, it’s still able to generate inspiration. I mean, even if you hear or see something that’s crappy (feel free to insert a composer who isn’t Danny here), it can lead you to a desire to do better.

In a sense, I suppose if someone were to confuse inspiration with copying someone else, then that would pretty much mean that everyone rips everyone off, starting with the first composer, the first writer, the first painter, and so on….

I for one tend to believe that everything you’re interested in over-laps. I mean, I can’t read or write music worth @!#$, but I can write and draw while listening to it.

(And besides, I’ve lost my faith in humanity a looonnggg time ago, too. I mostly get inspiration from my dog)!

SO if we are saying that some people see “inspired” as “copying” and you get inspiration from your dog…Am I to assume your dog is one heck of an artist? :)

just something to lighten the mood around here, Jo the little elfgirl
