GuestThis is from the comingsoon.net website:
‘Warner Bros. Pictures has made it official – director Brett Ratner (Rush Hour 2) will direct the feature film action-adventure Superman for the studio, it was announced today by Jeff Robinov, President, Domestic Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.
Produced by Jon Peters (Ali, Batman) and written by J.J. Abrams (Armageddon, executive producer of TV’s “Alias”), the project is a re-imagining of the Superman legend. The screenplay is based upon DC Comics’ classic character, created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.
“Superman is an American icon and a timeless hero who shares a rich history with Warner Bros.,” said Alan Horn, President, Warner Bros. “We are very happy to be working with Brett, Jon and J.J. on this important new chapter in the Superman legacy.”
Stated Jeff Robinov, “J.J. Abrams and Jon Peters were given the daunting task of re-imagining the Superman epic and J.J. met the challenge, delivering a terrific script with emotion, depth and scale that bring new dimension to this legendary character. We couldn’t be more pleased to entrust the next chapter in the Superman mythology to Brett Ratner, a dynamic director whose skillful blend of action, comedy and drama has captured the imaginations of audiences worldwide.”‘
Actually, I think Lalo should score it (if it is between Danny and him), but I’ll love to see any large scale Elfman score – although he has said that he wants to do smaller projects (just remember, Superman probably want see the light of day for at least 2 years).

GuestI’m gonna say this because this is how i feel about it. If this project has nothing to do with elfman/ burton, then i could care less about any Superman outing in the future. I already made the same mistake with Schmacher. A reimagined Superman with a story that’s so deep and emotional it’ll make midwives cry in their popcorn doesn’t really say anything to me, either — A deep Superman has already been done by Christopher Reeves…and that’s the only guy i really give the credit to. That’s how i see it. Anyone else pales in comparison as far as i’m concerned.
And one other thing about these “cash cows” studios keep holding onto, afraid it’s gonna bomb and they’ll lose money on — not only will it eventually lose money ANYWAY as popular opinion changes, but these guys aren’t making money on it by holding it back, either..so i don’t get it. They shoulda done that movie a long time ago…when the cartoon was huge, for example. Same thing with Batman — they shoulda put him back on the screen in 99 or 2000, regardless of sales or Shumacher’s gay-pride-parade-on-film attempt. I just think it’s kinda funny how they bring these big movies out now, after the Xmen and Spiderman ran the gauntlet and survived. You’d think if there was ever a time to put superheroes up on the screen, now would be it. AT least MARvel isn’t selling out anymore.September 26, 2002 at 10:46 pm #42291Anonymous
Guestnot that this has any bearing, but that interview that was listed on here, the one in french, Danny said that he didn’t want to do action movies anymore, and had it not been specifically for the fact that Raimi was doing Spider-Man, he wouldn’t have done it. So although this thing, if it EVER gets off the ground, and it is indeed Ratner, I doubt that Elfman, from what he said, will go near it.

GuestYou have to understand that there are many riding factors which will decide Elfman’s involvement with SUPERMAN.
1) Jon Peters produced BATMAN
2) Warner Bros. financed BATMAN
3) Elfman scored BATMAN and SPIDER-MAN, two of the top grossing films of all-time, and the two top grossing comic book-to-film adaptions of all-time.
4) Studios and producers look for composers who are attached to hits.
5) Brett Ratner has already made it clear that Elfman is his choice composer for both FAMILY MAN (who would have thought this film was an Elfman-like project? It probably had more to do with Ratner and the producers convincing Elfman to score it).
6) Scoring SUPERMAN is a damn good career move. While Elfman’s career is as secure as film composers can get, a film at that level means a generous salary, residuals, etc. Not that those are things that Elfman is necessarily concerned about, but they are definite plusses. The film is a long ways away — so let’s not speculate too much.

GuestAh, but speculating is fun and is the driving force behind pointless rumors like all of that Red Dragon stuff we were subjected to months ago! Please, Ryan, can’t we speculate? Please please please!

GuestI will have to say that I agree, the original C. Reeve “Superman” is still too good to need replacing. A re-make is something that is created when the original is too out-dated, whether in story, acting, production values, etc. (Remember how we all discovered through somewhat painful experience that “Planet of the Apes” didn’t need to be remade after all, no matter how big of Burton fans we were/are?)
For example, Kenneth Branagh’s “Henry V” was made in 1988, and because of his incredible telling of the tale, it won’t need remaking for probably 20 more years. His “Hamlet” on the other hand, fell a little short, and an attempt within about 10 more years will be justified.
Any writer or director would also be stupid to remake “Emma” and “Sense and Sensibility” any time soon, since the movies with Gwyneth Paltrow and Emma Thompson, respectively, were high-class acts with little or no need of repair.
One of my favorite books, “James and the Giant Peach,” however, was lamely turned into a film, and I plan to do a remake as soon as I can get my hands on the necessary budget.
“Superman” is still too good. I CAN conceive of a touch-up job, in which they re-released it after removing the special effect hue around Superman while he’s flying. A minor digital re-touching would keep that film fresh for another 15 or 20 years. But not a whole new “retelling.”
(I am now going to put my armor on so that your heated rebuttals cannot penetrate my delicate epidermic layer.)

GuestSo, so sad….Superman is hacky, and Danny is not. What to do, what to do….
Oh! I’ll go and see the damn thing! Maybe if I keep my eyes shut….
