Well, if you really want to get into this, my best advice is to start learning now. Get as many books on composing, orchestration, arrangement, theory and such and read them to death. You have a computer so get a free sequencer (do a google search) and start jotting down stuff. Try to order the scores you want online and above all: LISTEN to as much film music as possible and WATCH as many films as you can. When you are old enough to start college, hopefully you will have quite a bit of knowledge and be able to write some fairly good music. Send it to some highly regarded schools for music (don’t come to america though, trust me on this, there are TOO MANY composers here) and perhaps you will be able to get a scholership and leave where you are. Best of luck,

Knight (Most people I know here in America don’t know about film scores, and alot of young people here like Rap so don’t feel too bad)

    JS,

You could do all the learning, spend a lot of time woking on composing, and eveything that Knight suggested *OR* you can do like Danny did and go find a Steve Bartek to do it all for you!

I can see that coming to America (or England – though there probably isn’t enough of a film industry here to support many film composers, television composition is another option) would be difficult if you are still in education. I don’t know for sure, but expect that online shops like amazon.com would be able to send you copies of some books on orchestration. There are regional equivalents of amazon.com (I say “regional” because some countries appear to share versions of Amazon sites), but it is sometimes worth using the American version for widest selection of English-language materials.

I agree with Knight that just experiencing film music is a good way of getting a good start, but recommend (if you have not already done so) learning an instrument also. The keyboard, though not essential, is a useful tool of the composer, and knowing your way round it is at least expected. If you cannot afford tuition, there are many book-and-CD tutor publications that can at least give you a feel for it. Try picking out some of your favourite tunes to start with.

Don’t give up on Western classical music, or any other music. All composers are influenced by their listening past. Danny Elfman may have spent many years listening to film music at the cinema, but he also enjoys the music of Stravinsky and Prokofiev, and has a big interest in various “ethnic” sources, particularly when it comes to percussion. So when you listen to any film music, it, in turn, is influenced by other types of music. Of course, your family and friends may be equally shocked by Stravinsky!!

I’m afraid I have no idea how you get from Kazakhstan to Hollywood (turn left at Piccadilly Circus?), but to make the jump to film music, you need to get a feel for the “music” side.

Sorry about that. I have no idea who you are, so you may be a 57 year old concert pianist with a huge family fortune, but I thought I’d try pointing out the very basics.

    Hardy-har-har, that wasn’t funny.

ANYHOW, learning an instrument is important, but to be a composer you have to know MANY instruments and what they can do, and if you can’t afford a keyboard or your family will not let you have one or something, just fiddle with free sequencers (I know there are free ones out there). But if at all possible, do get an instrument with a high range ala keyboard, piano, guitar, harp, ect. ect.

    Good luck
