GuestI hear about certain Elfman scores all the time (Edward, Batman, Pee Wee, ect.) but some of my favs people just don’t talk about…am I just crazy? These are what I am talking about:
Freeway
To Die For
Scrooged
Dead Presidents
Mars Attacks!
ect.Does anyone else love these scores as much as I do?
Knight (Now listening to The Frighteners soundtrack for the 1,000th time)

GuestBlack Beauty! Black Beauty! Black Beauty! Black Beauty! The best score of the early 90s, in my opinion. That one makes me cry like an underage girl who has had too much champagne on prom night, and discovered the ulterior motive behind her smarmy date’s “caring and concerned” attitude…
-E (copying Michael L’s infatuation with Edward…)

GuestI absolutely LOVE the Dolores Claiborne soundtrack. It might actually be my favorite of all time. I’m not sure how popular it is, but I know I love it!
Mars Attacks!. . . Man, I wonder how I always forget about the score and the movie. They’re such classics!

GuestSommersby and Dolores Clairbone are just incredible. I often hear about Black Beauty but i find the score, despite its beauty, too conventional.

Guestto die for and freeway are definately cool. (best desriptive word for them, don’t you think?) love the main titles for to die for. and what about time scooter? hm? “wonderful wonderful time scooter..”
some guys may not call it a ‘traditional’ score, but once i turn POTA on, i usually keep it on my stereo for a week. that may be one of my favorite recently unspoken-of scores.
lexi- who is watching ‘get over it’ and is saddened that steve bartek doesn’t have more cues. honestly, if he doesn’t have a score-maker elf, he’s got sisqo or hoku taking up his space.

GuestPOTA is probably elfman’s most commercial score, wenever i go to circuit city i always see it in the top5 score cd along with the ridiculously overrated gladiator score which in my opinion put titanic to shame.
1: scrooged is classic(beetljuicy nightbred tales from the crypt of darkman-ish) the 8 minutes of score does not do it justice, it only wets my appetite. the film also deserves much more credit as being an alternative take on dickens’ classic.
2: flubber which is pure zaniness and a return to elfy’s early pee wee mickey mouse type scoring. track 5 “it’s alive” and the “main title” always put a smile on my face.
3: mission: impossible a revolutionary score for elfman as he creates a new sound for the mid 90s, which is heard to full effect in POTA sum 5 years later. but the much adored “the hunt” from that score has some competition with “zoomA” which in my opinion is elfmans most intense piece action music clocking in at less than 2 minutes. track 12 “uh-oh” also catches my attention because of its lighty adventure bouncyness making me think of spiderman’s “costume montage”.

GuestOh yes, PoTA is one of my favorites also! WAAAY underrated.

GuestI love POTA, it’s so powerful, but it IS noticed! So is Black Beauty (I hear about that one all the time), and while I love these scores (there is not one that Danny has done that I have not liked), it’s the strange ones that catch my attention. That is why I love Freeway so much, and To Die For. It’s the strange things that make me think he is a genius (like in the To Die For main titles, the way he mixed up thrash metal was just…..brilliant!!!). But Freeway, now that is the most underrated of them all. Sure, it was not for a big budget movie and yes, he was only paid $1 for it, but DAMN people!!! I think most of it is Synths, and that is awesome in itself. He made it totally insane, which was what the movie was all about. Also, on a side note, I just got my copy of Boingo and damn, I am totally taken back by it. The best Boingo CD in my opinion (which probably doesn’t mean anything to you people
).Knight (Now if only Danny could do his solo album….!!!)

GuestFlubber has been a favorite of mine since it was released. A great score that harkened back to Danny’s Pee-Wee scores with more UMPH!
I would also like to put up another overlooked score up for further discussion:
MIDNIGHT RUN !!!
This is a rare bird in Elfman scores for his use of a Jazz Band (only similar to parts of Hot To Trot) with strings interlaced. I wish he would score a film with the same instrumentation today, because after this score there were many films tempted with it – and it definitely showed (Bushwhacked by Bill Conti comes to my mind immediately as an example of this).
Nat who thinks this was a great idea for a thread during this “down time” – way to go Knight!

GuestDoes “Pee Wee” also refer to Big Top Pee Wee? I love this album but it’s rarely mentioned, even in this thread

Btw To Die For main title, Scrooged (main title and crematorium), and POTA (!!!!) are also my favorites

GuestI agree with you there Reza, for some reason, Big Top Pee Wee’s score really got to me. When I got it, I had it playing while I was doing other things, and there was more than once where I just had to stop what I was doing and listen, it totally took me by surprise. As for Midnight Run, I haven’t heard too much of it (never saw the movie and only heard what is on my MFADT CD). I’ll have to find a video store that has it…
Knight (Who now sees that listening to Elfman’s commentary on the DVD is WAY better than the version on here, GO BUY IT PEOPLE!!!)

Guestthe pee wee dvd! i rented that for my burton marathon when i was sick! the commentaries are brilliant! timbo really comes alive when he’s with someone else, (if you’ve heard the edward scissorhands burton commentaries you know how dull he can be.) and he was with paul reubens and they were just laughing! it was great. and the elvin commentaries are very nostalgic. most of the commentaries i’ve heard he just sorta repeats what he said on each one. (though i do like the ‘mooshy’ talk from edward and the speaking in tongues in POTA.) (someone who hasn’t heard these commentaries is really missing out!)
lexi: is it odd to own mfadt vol two but not vol. one?

GuestScrooged was fantastic, but my favorite has to be Nightmare Before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands. They are the most unique score’s I’ve heard to date, not that ALL of Danny’s scores are unique, but I really like those two the best.

GuestPlease don’t shoot me, but I was never into the whole composer-musicy thing until I got reaaalllllllllly into Oingo Boingo. I thought it’d be cool to check out some of Danny’s other stuff, since I loved Nightmare Before Christmas anywho, and now I’m a huge filmmusic geek. I think you guys underrate Oingo Boingo’s impact on Danny’s career. Uh. Yeah.
And, I agree, Scrooged was was great!
