GuestI thought it was just a rumor . . . this was on Glenn Shadix’s website, so I guess it’s fairly reliable information.
The news is brewing! Tim Burton will be directing “Big Fish” for Sony based on the novel by Daniel Wallace. The movie is set in Alabama and will be shot in the South. Richard Zanuck will produce. No official word on casting.
I honestly can’t say I’m too excited about this one yet

Guest“set in Alabama”…? Huh?…
“shot in the South.”…? Yea?…
Hmmm, I wonder if they will film in Mississippi? If so I might try to sneak a peek. There is quite a lot of filming done in Mississippi, and I had some friends who took a couple of days off from school to be extras in COOKIES’ FORTUNE directed by Robert Altman filmed in Oxford, Mississippi. Also O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU was filmed all around the state.
It might be interesting. Being from the South, I think of movies set here as family reunions – They don’t last long but you leave with a full belly and lots of stories.

GuestBIG FISH has the potential to be something really good. It’s sort of old news if you don’t know about it. Take a look at The Tim Burton Colletive website – you’ll find out all you need to know.
Honestly I’m looking forward to it. I think Burton needs to, and can do something a little more mature. I think it will be something (esspecially after POTA) will regain his name for fans.

GuestI just bought the book this weekend ($4.99, baby!). Shouldn’t take long to read because it’s pretty short. Looks charming and I think it ought to be quite cool. A return to the character based stuff that made EDWARD SCISSORHANDS and ED WOOD so great, with a bit of fantasy mixed in.

GuestThe Hollywood Reporter anounced today (Aug. 1st) that two of the leads will be played by Albert Finney and Ewan MacGregor. Good news!

GuestI live across the street from a bookstore, so I practically throw my money at them whenever I walk through the door….but I haven’t read Big Fish. I’m thinking anything that has Tim Burton attatched to it has the potential to be good.
(And, if Tim’s directing, then there’s the probability of having Danny composing–which is always a good thing–and I don’t mean that in the Martha Stewart-ish sense of the phrase)!

GuestIf it’s anything like Edward Scissorhands, I will be elated! POTA was a very big dissappointment for me, considering that I had loved every Burton film before that…and besides, Danny does great scoring-to-the-film when he works on Tim’s pictures. (And Ed Wood was also great; Shore did well on that pic).
Ah, bookstores…I think I could pass my apartment off as a small bookstore…I have a friend who owns a bookstore, and also work for a publishing company in the summer, so I get a lot of “gratis” merchandise (which is lovely). Let’s put it this way: my apartment doesn’t have any walls per se, but there are a lot of bookshelves that serve the same purpose. (Hey, what can I say? I’m poor, and a writer…currently trying to figure out what would be a good culinary accompaniment to “stewed manuscript rejection letters.” Hm…shower curtain a flambe? What about “grilled table leg marinated in early morning coffee?” Any good recipes?) Ha!
The only good writer is a skinny writer,

GuestSince Ewan McGregor is my favorite actor, I was interested to hear that he was reportedly going to be in “Big Fish”, and I found this article at a fan site of his and I guess it’s true:
Alabama will be setting for filming of story from writer David Wallace
After being frustrated in the past when major films set in Alabama wound up being filmed elsewhere, Alabama has landed a Columbia Pictures project that will star five-time Oscar nominee Albert Finney.
The movie, Big Fish, is based on a novel by Birmingham native Daniel Wallace.
Tim Burton, whose previous projects include the first two Batman movies, will direct for Columbia Pictures, The Birmingham News reported.
The filmmakers will be in Alabama for six to eight months and plan to start shooting in January, said Brian Kurlander, the director of the Alabama Film Office. They will use several locations around the state.
“They’ve looked at Wetumpka, Prattville and Montgomery and have been around in Birmingham,” he said Thursday.
Starring with Finney will be Ewan McGregor, who had leading roles in Moulin Rouge and both Star Wars prequels.
Wallace said he is thrilled that Big Fish will be filmed in his home state.
“All of my books take place in Alabama,” Wallace said from his home in Chapel Hill, N.C. “It’s gratifying that the film will create the same background that I’ve always had in my own mind.”
Wallace’s book, Big Fish: A Novel of Mythic Proportions, centers on the relationship between a man and his father.
The son is a reporter who returns to his home in Ashland to be with his father before he dies.
The son pieces together stories and reshapes them into a collection of legends and myths about his father.
Finney and McGregor will play the same character. Finney will play the father and McGregor will portray him as a younger man seen in flashbacks.
Such past films as Forrest Gump and Fried Green Tomatoes were filmed out of state.
Kurlander said that an incentive package that Gov. Don Siegelman signed into law last year helped bring Big Fish to Alabama.
The plan offers sales- and lodging-tax abatements to companies filming in the state
