Following the success of The Goldsmith Project, AYS explores the work of famed film composer Danny Elfman. This is the first in a 3 year project to explore the music and musical life of this brilliant, four-time Oscar-nominated composer. While Elfman has composed concert works as well, this is a rare opportunity to hear his film scores performed live! The afternoon symposium will feature a live performance and discussion of his innovative work and collaborations.

Wish I could be there! Unfortunately I’m moving at the end of this month into a new house so I have no $$.

I noticed that no one here posted about the event, so I thought I’d chime in. The evening was great. Elfman was there, along with his brother, mom and other family members. The first suite for Edward Scissorhands was magical. They played to a live film accompaniment for “Beautiful New World”, “Ewardo The Barber”, “Ice Dance” and “The Grand FInale”. The acoustics were perfect and hearing the choir live was sumptuous.

Next, they moved to the Finale and End Credits from Sommersby. This was my favorite section of the show, surprisingly. When the traditional/Americana flavors for the End Credits began, I felt the mood in the auditorium light up. I don’t know if most people knew that music – but there was a definite spark that was felt when the banjo plucking and square dance beats kicked in. I always liked that music, but hearing it live reminded me how beautiful it really was.

Last and certainly not least, was Batman. I’m sure you can all imagine what that sounded like live and the audience erupted into a thunderous applause following the “Reprise” at the end of the suite, which began with the “Opening Credits” and moved into “Descent Into Mystery” (absolutely thrilling with the choir) and “Up The Cathedral” (with a real live organ!)

Watching David Newman conduct was exhausting. He clearly threw himself into the work and by the time the entire concert was finished, he looked like he had just ran a marathon. A standing ovation was obvious and Elfman ran up to the front and walked up on stage. The applause got even larger. The AYS nailed it and Elfman was clear to give them props. He also hugged Newman before leaving during the applause, only to come back for one final bow.

It was an amazing night and I look forward to next year.
