GuestHey, elf – I was at that same concert with you… I take back all those qualms I had with the scores. Yes, a pretty flawless performance (except for the last note of the whole damn symphony – the piccolo player messed up, and his note detuned). Sorry – just to be picky! But yeah, amazing. Howard Shore conducts really wierd, though… his left arm keeps swinging behind his back, and he likes to jump around, with his legs wide apart. He was doing some Merengue, my friend thought. You notice any of this, Elf? I won’t be going to the Albert Hall – I don’t like that venue. You’ll hear it just about as badly as you’ll see it… unless you cough up for a front seat. Then, you’ll break your neck looking upwards. Southbank’s good enough for me! hehe. Yeah. Definately a great concert!

Guestyeah i noticed his dancing alright
. ya know what annoyed me about the performance was the pan flute solo from the “steward of Gondor”. unfortunately the performer didn’t seem to have rehersed it well. and its one of my favourite tracks. but as a whole it was an outstanding concert. really so impressive. it was great to hear the cimbalon, pan flute and bowed cymbals and stuff used with the orchestra. did you notice the percussion girl thumping the strings of wat looked like a baby grand piano during the 5/4 amon hen part? it was really great to see how shores music was actually orchestrated.i had a great time in London, great city, definitely looking forward to the concert in september, i might have to cough up for those front seats man, forget about the sore neck:) ohh…and during the interval i took a picture of the timpani score and the first violin score. with my digital camera u can zoom up to the notes and actually make them out really well. great! well, if i played the timpani or the violin i suppose!elf

GuestElf –
You took pics of the actual score?! C’mon, now, don’t be a tease…do share! Any chance you could email them to me? I live in Cattletown, USA; we’re orchestrally bankrupt out here…

Guesthi. the J, can i ask you..which seats do you recommend i book in the royal albert…the arena seats or the stalls or the grand T?? the stalls are more expensive so i assume i can get a better view of the orchestra from here, even tho the seats arent as close as the arenas.

GuestElf – I know they’re more expensive, but yeah – the stall would probably be best, but wherever you are, don’t expect to be able to take more of these photos
Talking of which… jonathan_d@galarismail.com… I’d love to see them, too! hehe. Do a little more research for the Albert Hall, though – don’t take my word alone as gospel. It’s the only major concert hall in london I’ve still not performed in (except for the Purcell Room), so I don’t know it as well as the others. I know what you mean about the pan pipes – not quite as they were in the movie! But the fiddle soloist was great!! I was very impressed with his part!>¦:o)

Guest*Silently green with envy over above posts*
Should have crashed the concert. I have a piccolo too! In some kind of mission we could have “taken out” the duff one and replaced him/her with… heck I’m the worst piccolo player, you’d have slaughtered me for my intonation. :o)
If you go to http://www.royalalberthall.com and type a search for “seating plan” you’ll get to a nice flash-based plan of the Albert Hall, complete with pictures and views. I’ve never felt rich enough to pay for the stalls, and end up quite high up. If you’re Promming, though, you should always try the arena. Even if it’s just the once.
The J – what do you perform?

GuestHey, man, just set up a free account at http://www.angelfire.com and upload your pics there. It’s super easy and you don’t have to type in your real email address.
May 28, 2004 at 4:46 pm #50281Anonymous
GuestBlunt – I play piano, orchestral percussion, drum kit, trombone. When performing onstage, I’m usually doing any sort of percussion. So, if anyone in London needs to hire a very good drummer, you know where to come… ;o)
Elf – please set up that Angelfire account. W’ed love to see em!
