GuestWhenever I listen to the Spider-Man soundtrack, the roughly ten seconds from 3:13 – 3:23 on Track 13, “Final Confrontation,” always remind me of music from The Matrix. Has anyone else had this thought, or is it just me? And if it’s not just me, why does it sound familiar? What part of The Matrix sounds like this? (it’s been bugging me!)

GuestHmm, lets see……
Nope, I don’t get any Matrix vibe from that at all. The music in the matrix was never that good, but that is just my opinion
.Knight (Who just watched the Musketeer and thought that everything in that movie was great…except for the music. If I can remember, that is how I felt about the Matrix too, except that the Matrix had better music).

GuestI can’t make that connection, though, I’ve only seen The Matrix twice.
However, when Neo is trying to climb to the Scaffolding when he’s sidestepping outside of his work building (while talking on the cell), it resembles Red Dragon’s main theme.

GuestWhew… thanks Robert. I thought I was the only one for a moment. Now if I can just figure out WHERE in the Matrix is there music like this!! I know it’s a specific scene, I just can’t place it……..

GuestI’m a dork, and when a friend played the Matrix soundtrack for me, the only music I even noticed was the tiny snippet from the first movement of Enigma Variations.
If that was all I noticed, then it was probably IMO a lackluster score. I don’t think Spiderman is . . . well, not its individual sound, anyway (I think each track could use a little more individuality)

GuestThe Matrix score is moody creative noise. I couldn’t hold on to it.

GuestI loved the Matrix score, it is scores like that that you don’t get to hear often these days, yet in the 70’s composers seemed to be experimenting left and right. Not to say that the technique is unique – listen to some of John Adams’ larger works for orchestra like “Harmonielehre” and you will find the origin of the score from The Matrix. Don Davis did a terrific job, and I’m waiting to hear what he does with the next two.

GuestI believe it is when neo resurrects himself etc. it is not exactly the same but it has the same feel as those 10 secs.

GuestI just re-watched The Matrix, and I think also the music during the helicopter sequence is somewhat similar in feel to those 10 Spider-Man seconds. Also, the brake drum nearing the end of the 10 seconds is a sound that was used quite often throughout The Matrix (note the point at which Neo and Trinity are walking toward the security checkpoint with “lots of guns”).

GuestWell, saw the new one, and I figured why not post my opinion since we are already talking about it.
I thought the new score was much better than the original, but there where a few moments that I couldn’t tell if it was music placement or not. Mainly in the fight scenes. It’s not one that is high on my list though, so I probably won’t buy it.
Knight (Elfman could have done better hehehe)

GuestI found the original score to be more cohesive and propulsive. It built towards the large shift to that major at the end so effectively. The Matrix Reloaded score was off somehow. It didn’t have the same steady drive to a conclusion that the first one has (and this is something that Elfman is particularly good at). All the big moments where scored with “big” music, nothing in between and nowhere left to go. Some cues just seemed “wrong” for the scenes – and even my friend who is not into film music like me, stated that the music sounded off in many places. It would have almost been better if they had used preexisting techno music for all of the fight scenes instead of creating anything (the Propellerheads Song in the first movie springs to mind as a great example of this). And I usually hate the use of Pop songs in action movies (ala Daredevil).
Don Davis is a good composer, but I feel that this score was just spotted wrong.

Wow! I’ve defended Davis and criticized him in the same board. How weird is that. I really would like to hear some of his full concert works.

GuestIncidentally the score is better on CD.

GuestJust as a point of interest, while I could be talking about the exact same section since I don’t yet own the Spiderman score, the music from the start of the original Spiderman trailer (where it opens with the cops wandering around trying to find him) is definately straight out of The Matrix… when I first saw the trailer and the music started before the opening shots I actually thought it was a trailer for the second film.
