Well, I just thought I would let you all know that yesterday, for the first time in my life, I watched A Simple Plan. Yes, that’s right. Finally.

    What a great movie.

Danny’s score was very unobtrusive, and I barely even noticed it’s existence throughout the whole movie other than the main titles. Which, I’m sure was a good thing, because the movie was so well executed that it’s hard to really take your concentration off of what’s going on, and the music was there to intensify situations without you even realizing it. Very smart scoring. Very smart movie.

    Heh, very depressing movie.

Well, for Danny Elfman, that sounds pretty unique – I find his scores particularly ‘noticeable’ during a movie, moreso than other composers (I hope this is taken constructively… I’m gonna knock Danny on his own board, now… *gulp*). Danny’s a great composer, and I would rarely go so far as to say he ever really is intrusive with his music, but he does like to have fun… I think it’s acceptable to say that at some points in Beetlejuice, he is actually a little intrusive (don’t ask me which points – I won’t remember!… I just remember it happened).

However, after hearing the soundclips of Danny’s score for simple plan, I can sorta picture the atmosphere you’re getting at, Sleepy – I’m also yet to see that movie. Damn, I’ve got some big viewing gaps to be filled!

That movie is evidence that Sam Raimi has more talent than someone who’s only seen the Evil Dead movies could possibly imagine.

Don’t get me wrong, the ED flicks are more important to me than many of the so-called Hollywood classics (your Casablancas, your Sunset Boulevards, etc.). It pisses me off when people say that the Evil Dead movies are so bad they’re good – I cant help but say “Noooo! They’re so GOOD they’re good! The Street Fighter movie is so bad it’s good! Can’t you see the difference?”

Anyway, since you’ve seen A Simple Plan, Sleepy, you know what I’m talking about. And yes, it definitely has one of Elfman’s best scores. Not only does it works perfectly as a score, intesifying the emotional moments of the fillm and so on, but it’s great as a standalone piece of music. It never fails to keep me bummed out when I feel depressed. :)
