A post at FSM has let the cat out of the bag — there are at least two additional composers credited with writing music for SPIDER-MAN 2: Christopher Young and John Debney. Joseph LoDuca is also rumored to have written additional music for the film.

I have confirmed this with one of the composers listed above.

The reason? Picture changes. Last minute changes to the final act. We won’t know until the film comes out just who wrote what, but it’s probably a good idea not to panic or worry too much.

Well, sorry Ryan, but I’m kinda worried. I was really looking forward to this score and weeks after weeks, the impatience faded away. So, I won’t panic until the films comes out but still…2 or 3 additional composers ? That’s more than 2 minutes of music.

At least Raimi has the decency to have music in Spider-Man 2 that isn’t tracked-on from the first Spider-Man. I truly wish George Lucas had done the same as Raimi for his previous Star Wars film. John Williams deserved better treatment.

So, basically what happened was they had screenings and the people didn’t like the ending. So, they had to go back and reshoot it all over again? I hate it when that happens, because people are so stupid they usually don’t know a good ending from a bad ending.

Hey, c’mon Dantz – have YOU seen the ending? Maybe they were right – even masters such as Sam Raimi make mistakes. Give these test audiences a chance – they’re not ALL dummies (well, you might be forgiven for thinking so, with some of the stuff Hollywood’s putting out at the moment ;o) ).

Well, I’m glad they redid the ending of Army of Darkness.

I just hate it when directors change movie endings to please the general audience because usually, the general audience loves the nicey-nicey kissy-kissy lived-happily-ever-after endings that I usually don’t care for much. Sometimes it does work better, though, I admit.

I read the FSM thread and this news is almost too weird to believe. Elfman has never had this many additional composers on one film before (the only two I can think of would be one cue for Nightbreed by Shirley Walker, and of course, the helicopter scene in Darkman by Jonathan Sheffer). Christopher Young? That’s amazing actually…Young and Elfman on one score. Debney comes as no shock, neither does LoDuca’s involvement, since he was Sam’s composer of choice for many of his projects. But no matter how additional composers are involved, it comes as a complete shock that there are any additional composers on this film. It’s just enormously surprising. This should be very interesting.

Just makes me wonder, when (I hope!) the score CD comes out, if we’ll be able to hear unreleased cues for the original scenes. Shouldn’t get my hopes up, though.

This causes me to wonder, if the ending has been changed, will there be no grand Elfman finale? I loved the music during Spidey’s final swing in the last Spider-Man, as well as his finales for Batman, Sleepy Hollow, Big Fish, and so on. I will seriously freak if he doesn’t get a finale in.

I do like the works of John Debney, especially after “The Passion.” He collaborates well with Danny. Christopher Young’s music doesn’t really stand out to me, and I’ve never heard of Joseph LoDuca. Ryan, which have you confirmed with? If I recall correctly, Bill Conti was listed on IMDb in the very early stages of production as a composer, but it doesn’ seem like that is true now…or is it?

    Spider-Fan,

Have you heard Chris Young’s scores for Flowers in the Attic or The Fly II? How about the Hellraiser scores? Just wondering.

Danny rarely personally brings in helpers, as you say, and under normal circumstances his working methods allow very swift changes and alterations to his music. So either (a) the changes were very drastic, or (b) at this time Danny’s schedule didn’t allow him to return to the score. Might he be working on The Corpse Bride already? Personally, although I don’t believe he can write boring or repetitive music, I’m less interested in his score for the sequal than in his two confirmed future projects. Sequal scores by original composers are often a case of courtesy to a director or creator rather than any kind of renewed creative interest in a project. Twice before he’s done it, and thankfully added a new dimension to the music, but in this case it doesn’t look as if Sam Raimi is varying his format structurally.

I don’t know the extent of the changes made to the final act of the film, but it has nothing to do with test audiences — more like the filmmakers trying to fix what they think needs fixing.

It’s important for composers to have the director sign off on demos and or attend the recording sessions where changes can be made on the fly. In some cases the director won’t attend sessions because they are deep in accelerated post-production (to meet a pushed up deadline), despite a request from the composer to attend. Unfortunately what results are problems on the mixing stage, when a director starts rejigging cues and asking the composer for changes — when it’s too late! Read into this what you will………….

Elfman is already in London, so he’s obviously moved on.

I sincerely hope this score isn’t compromised by the additional music, though Debney and Young are very capable composers. If there are Elfman threads running through their cues, then we have nothing to worry about.

Ryan – Sorry… this is cheeky, and I know I ask this every damn time I hear of a project coming to London, but where’s Elfman going to be working?

    Dylan,

No, I’ve never heard any of those scores. Are they good, because if they are, I’ll take your word for it. I have full confidence that Christopher Young, John Debney, and any other additional composers can contribute great music to the full score. The only thing that bothers me is that Spider-Man’s score got me interested in film scores and Danny’s music–2 years it’s been now–and I was hoping for the continuation of that score to be all him. I really hope that he comes back for the third one as Raimi has already signed on to do, even though he’s never had a trilogy of scores before. The music of Spider-Man reminds me of a time when I was my life revolved around “Spider-Man” and hearing the new stuff brings me back to that time. It’s really a good feeling. That’s just what I have to say about it.

I don’t really want to start a new thread about this, as I’ve been taking up space with a bunch of new threads so I’ll just say it here and if someone wants to post a new thread then they can.

The IMDb now lists Danny Elfman as the composer for Spider-Man 3, even though Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire aren’t even listed yet.

You should know by now that IMDb is full of **** a lot of the time, and you should take what they have listed with a grain of salt.

In the topic about this matter at FSM, someone specifies that “Young wrote the 2nd half of the elevated subway fight sequence.”

We don’t know of course what it corresponds to but I wonder if it is Young’s music that we can hear in this video :

It can be Elfman’s but the first time I saw it, I wasn’t aware of the additional composers’ problem and it already sounded really different of usual Elfman’s action style to me.

I’m not sure about that one. The part at the end with one of Danny’s themes after he awesomely shoots through the walkway sounds like Danny’s work, but maybe before that it Young’s. The end after Spidey is tossed sounds a bit like Mission: Impossible to me.

Now, if Ryan had said “The Queen Vic, Walford” The J and I might have been more believing. :o) There’s certainly no Coronation Street in London, although the country’s peppered with them, in homage, no doubt, to the longest-running soap opera rather than anything to do with British royalty.

Anyway, I cycle through a smallportion of London to go to work, so I’ll keep an eye out for red headed men carrying scores (or Bridget Fonda under one arm..). And then I could ask him what’s up with Spider-Man 2. Do you think he’d punch me or would he have some kind of a rep to do it on his behalf. Maybe that’s what he has Steve Bartek for!!
