GuestDon’t know if anybody talked about this already, but I was recently watching the wonderfully dark and funny episodes of the BBC sitcom “The League of Gentlemen” (nothing to do with the “League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” graphic novel or movie) and I just realized how Elfman-ish the main theme of that series sounds. I think it deserves a place in TV music history just like the Simpsons theme. It was composed by the very talented Joby Talbot, one of the musicians in one of my favorite british bands, The Divine Comedy. If you don’t know any of this, you should check it out. “League of Gentlemen” is the darkest comedy series ever made, a true masterpiece; the theme tune from the series is a delight; and The Divine Comedy, with its dark sense of humour and lush string arrangements is a wonderful, creative band that no Elfman fan should miss.

GuestI’m a fan of Divine Comedy. “Tonight We Fly” is one of my favorites, which is Michael Nyman inspired. I know the band has actually covered some of Nyman’s stuff and this was my introduction with the band. The lead singer’s voice took some time to get used to but now I’ve grown to love it (not the case with Emerson, Lake, and Palmer or Dream Theater)..

GuestMy life revolves around the Cartoon Network and Sci-fi channel (which, may explain a lot)! Anyways, I haven’t seen the show noted above, but I’ve always got a kick outta Dexter’s Lab. The theme seems sounds like something Danny could’ve done–maybe. Then agian, I’m not too good at judging music and such….

GuestWas the show aired on Comedy Central a few years back? It looks like something I remember seeing commercials for. It looked funny, but I never got around to watching it and it wasn’t on for very long.
Is there anywhere I can hear the theme? Like a website or something, because I don’t have the money to buy the DVD.

GuestYeah, it was on Comedy Central, but not for too long. Which I don’t understand because it actually was very funny.

GuestI’M THE BIGGEST FAN OF LOG!!! I’ve got all the episodes on tape, and tonnes of merchandies! It’s absolutely fantastic, and yes, the theme is very Elfmanesque! I love it! * Your my wife now, Dave! *

GuestBartnFink93 – here’s a link for the theme – http://www.jungle.mcmail.com/league/league2.htm
It should be on there somewhere.June 30, 2003 at 2:49 pm #45776Anonymous
GuestI got used to Neil Hannon’s voice (he’s the lead singer from Divine Comedy) pretty quickly and I have to say – the man has one of the great voices! And he’s also an excellent composer. But the best thing about his songs is the great, dark and sometimes a bit perverted sense of humor of its lyrics.
About “The League of Gentlemen”, it’s one of the best and most original TV sitcoms ever. It’s funny, because some of its dark and bloody humor reminds me of Richard Elfman’s work. That black-faced clown, Papa Lazarou (“Is that Dave???”), seems to have jumped right out of “Forbidden Zone”. There’s a great “League of Gentlemen” site, complete with video excerpts from the episodes, and audio snippets (including the different versions of Joby Talbot’s main titles theme) to be found in here:http://www.leagueofgentlemen.co.uk/
Really, if you are new to this weird universe, this site is the best place to start. You will love it.
