GuestI received my Carnegie Hall Brochure for next season, and there, lo and behold there is a concert for new music, which includes a new commission by a composer named ELFMAN???? This is promising.
Anyone know anything about this???? You can check it out at carnegiehall.org under the 2004-2005 season “fast forward” series:Friday, January 21, 2005 at 7:30 PM

GuestIf this is Danny Elfman, I’ll be so sad because I’m positive that I won’t be able to attend.

GuestIn the Press Release it indeed mentions DANNY Elfman – more than once in fact.
Here, read it for yourselves:

GuestI don’t want to get my hopes up, but that would be an awfully big coincidence if we’re wrong. I had always wondered what a ‘real’ piece by Danny would sound like, and even internally debated the idea of commishioning him to do something, now that I have some sway in my college brass ensemble.
This may give me the courage to actually write him a letter, but I wonder how much something like that would cost…?
Keep us posted if anything develops with this mysterious premiere.

GuestI emailed them to find out any more information and just recieved this email back:
Dear Mr. Murphy,
Thank you for your inquiry regarding the commission of Danny Elfman for American Composers Orchestra’s Orchestra Underground concert January 21, 2005. Mr. Elfman was selected by American Composers Orchestra’s artistic leadership, Steven Sloane, music director; and Robert Beaser, artistic director.
Our goal with Orchestra Underground is to challenge conventional notions about symphonic music, embracing multidisciplinary and collaborative work, novel instrumental and spatial orientations of musicians, new technologies and multimedia. The series will develop new repertoire, and provide fertile working ground for artists who have not traditionally had access to the orchestral ensemble.
Again, thank you for your interest. More information about American Composers Orchestra can be found at http://www.americancomposers.org

His name is Robert Beaser, but for some reason this board removed his name because I just cut and pasted the whole email.

GuestNo – that worked too. Wierd indeed!
And, hey! They stole our idea! I’ve been part of an orchestra just like that, here in London for over a year, now. I’m a proud founding member! hehe. Unfortunately, we don’t have a full symphonic orchestra, but a miniaturised one. We’re called the “London Philharmonic Open Ear Orchestra”. There, I’ve finished the plug… back to hero worshipping…
Well, this concert sounds cool. Anyone going? If so, please tell us what it’s like when you’re done. And is there any way to get a recording of any of it?
There.
