    i haven’t found one yet…

parts of Elfman’s material are definitley in a league of their own..

but Joe Hisaishi’s music is consistantly wonderful and breath-taking..

    your thoughts?

What are you thinking? Dude, c’mon. Seriously. Think about it. You posted something on a Danny Elfman message board with the topic: “any composer better than Joe Hisaishi?”

Seriously, dude. Tell me if you found what’s wrong with that.

I’ve never heard of this Joe Hisaishi guy, so I couldn’t really make a judgment about how great he is…although, if he is as great as you say (consistently better than Elfman?!…I find that hard to believe), then I would think I would have at least heard of him by now. Maybe I’m just completely out of touch.

Composers betteer that Joe Hisaishi? I think pretty much all of them.

Agree with John. Hisaishi has turned out some terrible crap recently, like BROTHER and KIKIJURO. He’s certainly not a composer I’m familiar with, but I’ve had to suffer through both those albums to deliver reviews.

Funny, I was going to mention Kikujiro as one of the scores by Hisaishi that I found an affinity for. But since I now know I like “crap” then I’ll keep it to myself.

Woops! I’m glad I didn’t embrace myself fully and explain why I like it at least. :-)

    Nat

I find Hisaishi to be a very good melodist in the few scores I’ve heard. But he is no Akira Ifukube ;-)

Never heard of him either. But I bet he won’t jump into my top 10 anytime soon because while I may like the music without the film, sometimes I don’t like the music with the film (which is to me, what matters).

My new jumper (to my top 10) is Thomas Newman (yeah, I know, he is well known, but I have only been into film music for about 1 year). Road to Perdition was awesome.

Elfman is who got me into film music, and was the one who first got me in touch with classical, so he will ALWAYS be my fav. I acually see him as kind of a bridge, mixing the new with the old, for something totally amazing. He has never failed to surprise me with any score (yes, ANY) that he has done. I usually can’t say that about other composers (because there is usually something I don’t like).

Nat: You have your own taste, and there is nothing wrong with that. Hell, I listen to Deicide (a satanic death-metal band) sometimes, and I listen to Shakira sometimes, and some would find that totally wrong. Oh, and I do like Williams. His score to Jurassic Park was brilliant, I want to hear something breathtaking again (which I haven’t for a bit).

jeffro: That was a stupid question. You should have asked it on a Joe Hisaishi board. Why post here if you are not a big fan?

So you listen to Shakira too Knight? It’s nice to finally admit that to someone. :-)

Incidentally, Joe Hisaishi is nominated for the Saturn score award with Danny for the wonderful score to Spirited Away. I thought this would have been a great way to tie this thread with Danny Elfman (wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more) jeffro.

how can you talk bad about the person who scored (and the scores sound awesome with the film) Miyazaki’s films: my favorite are

    *Nausicaa
    *My Neighbor Totoro
    *Princess Mononoke
    *Spirited Away

those scores can’t be touched. and they are original and beautiful.

I posted this becuase I wanted to see if any Elfman fans appreciated Hisaishi’s music. Because I am disappointed with Elfmans last what? 5 films?

But before that Elfmans was in a league of his own…atleast in America.. and I am no new fan of his.

Mainly, I’m talking about RECENT scores… who can top Spirited Away? What is Elfman nominated for? I already forgot the movie..and the music no doubt..

no offense Elfman… we all have creative droughts…I just want a solid score from you… not bits and pieces of your wonderful music, but something full like Beetlejuice again..

    my TEN cents

I think Joe Hisaishi’s score for PRINCESS MONONOKE was very good! I haven’t seen the movie yet, but really want to see the movie.

And about the Elfman fans: I sometimes think they just like the Elfman scores. When there is added another composer at this message board, he is a bad composer.

Elfman’ score for SPIDERMAN was good, but not THAT good. And RED DRAGON was good in the movie, but on cd I think you can’t really listen to it. But I think BIG FISH will be a really good score.

    [shaking my head]

It’s funny how much people think that everyone shares thier opinion. Creative drought? Is that a joke? Spider-man was one of the best scores I have ever heard, as was Red Dragon, with or without the film. This is MY opinion. I think that Elfman is at the top of his game, but this is my opinion. I am not too into Hisaishi, but that is my opinion. Are you getting that it’s all my opinion (this statement is only my opinion). Before you rip on any composer for having a “creative drought” or say that a score was “forgettable”, remember some people (my opinion) will disagree with you, because that is just you opinion.

if everyone just pointed out that everything is everyone else’s opinion, there would be no truth or untruth. thats what Post-Mod has done to todays kids. some things are true, like Earth goes around the sun. Some things are false, like aliens exist on mars.

musically speaking, since music is the universal language, i’d say its not exactly an opinion and not exactly truth. but hey, majority rules in america, so i probably dont make much sense.

    anyways, the scores are dull

I am happy I can enjoy music from many composers and not limited to just several composers and it’s a pity if people can’t enjoy Elfman recent scores, well it’s their losses… for me, I really love both spider-man and red dragon main titles and end titles

*hm… hope my grammar is alright*

Who is he? I never even heard of the movies (except PRINCESS MONONOKE.) Still, I guess I should check it out … then I’ll go to Joe Hisaishi’s Appreciation Page and spread the gospel about Danny Elfman … Now how about Stan Pafufnick’s score for OBSCURE INCANTATIONS?

Aren’t the probes we sent to Mars alien to Mars; hence “aliens”?
I remember a movie made in the late 70’s early 80’s about a computer intelligence that takes over a house (I know there have been countless rehashes of this plot since then), but it was suppose to know everything, so they asked it if there was life on Mars, and when it replied YES they thought that they had got it to make an incorrect answer. The computer explained that it was the microbes on the probes that where the life (in a dormant state, but still life) that was on Mars.

What does this have to do with our discussion… absolutely nothing, or does it have everything to do with this thread?

Nothing! Joe Hisaishi, eh? Well, I have no clue who the guy is, and I probably won’t find out any time soon. My personal favorite “new” composer – in that he’s new to me – is Ed Shearmur. Yes, I’ve been enjoying “The Count of Monte Cristo” nearly every day when I get home; it’s got some fantastic action cues! But like I said, this has nothing to do with this discussion *grins*

It’s interesting that the examples of Hisaishi’s music are all for overrated animated films. No mention of his other pedestrian music.

I now proclaim this thread finished!
