GuestHi !
I was just looking at all my elfman cd’s and I just noticed Article 99… I bought this cd years ago, and listened to it only once. I was very disappointed, because at the time I bought it, Elfman used to compose only dark thematic elements (Darkman, Batman, edward scissorhands, beetlejuice etc…)Anyway, I was very amazed when I listened to it last night, because it sounds just as if Elfman had composed it last week. I mean, listen to “Simple Plan”, and then listen to Article 99. They’re very similar… And even more intresting, listen to “Big Fish”, and then to Article 99. You’ll see what I mean.
It’s very intresting to see that a score that did not sound like Elfman fifteen years ago, is acually the kind of score he composes now…
Anyway, I noticed another thing : how is it that this score did not make it into the Darkened Theater albums ? I think it’s actually the only score from that period that is missing on the albums… The score was released by Varese Sarabande, and this should not be a problem because they also released Pee Wee’s big adventure, Back to School, To die For or Dolores Caliborne. What do you guys think ?

GuestARTICLE 99 was released by Orion Pictures, which went bankrupt, and whose library of films I believe was subsequently sold to MGM. It was probably a case of not being able to secure the rights to release music from the score on MFADT Vol. 1 or 2.
If you listen to “Mayday”, you’ll notice some similiarities to the brass parts in the “Doc Ock Suite” on the SPIDER-MAN 2 album.

GuestI just bought this about two weeks ago from Amazon.com, used for $1.00. I enjoy it, the main theme is simple, yet attractive. Some of the music was also surprisingly and amusingly eccentic (which I didn’t expect at all). I’d definately recommend it.

GuestThat’s an interesting point, boingomusic. I’m picking here the similarity between Article 99 and Big Fish – they both employ two contemporary characteristics of Elfman’s style. In the case of Article 99 I found the clash between bouncy/lurid fantasy and sweet (slightly sickly?) underscore a bit of a turn-off, and didn’t think it worked particularly well in the film. With Big Fish I think he’s integrated the fantasy-style better (and it is used more appropriately in this case) and tightened up the more romantic/personal element of his writing, making for a score which worked better on film.
I admit, though, that I cannot see much of a similarity with A Simple Plan. Care to expand on your point of view?
