A short while back I read someone inquire about what exactly Bartek does. While I think this question will never go away, as none of us know exactly, I think it’s always fun to discuss.
Someone in the last post suggested that all Bartek does is take Elfman’s “violin” part and blow it up to 10 or 12 or 24 violins. I seriously doubt that anything is that simple in Steve Bartek’s job description. I don’t think any of these guys (the orchestrators) job is very simple…and I don’t exactly imagine danny does too much in the way of getting it ready for the orchestra. I mean, he’s been know to use in upwards of six, seven or eight orchestrators. that’s 8 guys working crazy hours to make two hours of music in a short period of time.
I don’t know why the word “orchestrator” is such a dirty word in Hollywood. I mean, most people use them. Shore has used them just not on LOTR, and Davis didn’t use them on the first Matrix but on the later two he did. Korngold used a bunch, Williams NEVER credits his guys in the albums. Who know is Danny has any real ability or knowledge to write for full orchestra…does it matter? The most important thing is that the composer has a vision…and not very much time. It’s his music, and that’s all we should care about.

I totally agree. They both do a lot of work in their own jobs. Remember that Elfman is self-taught, so not only does he lack time, but experience to self-orchestrate. They are both brilliant, both deserve recognition, and both make an amazing team together. I couldn’t have put what you said better myself.

Every time I check this board, there seems to be a different description of what Bartek actually does. I’ll be sceptical until the day I speak to Bartek in person, :::cough::: never.
