GuestHello all:
I’m looking for some help here. I’ve listened to the main theme from “Batman” a hundred times now, & I still can’t figure out what the choir is singing when the voices come in near the end of the overture (around the seven minute mark). I know that by the ending there are just “ahhhh’s” with the orchestra and stuff, but what is being sung about a minute and a half from the end of the main theme? I’m fascinated by all of Mr. Elfman’s work, and this is just one more thing that has caught my attention & made me curious. Any help here is greatly appreciated!

GuestIf you are referring to the eight minute suite on Music For A Darkened Theatre Volume I, I don’t think that part is from the “Main Titles”. I think that cue is called “Up the Cathedral”.
I don’t know what the chorus is singing, but it sounds like Latin. But I’m not very familiar with Latin so I’m not sure.

GuestOk, well, Let me listen to it right quick….
Nope, no choral work in Up the Cathedral, but there is in Decent into Mystery, which I think is what you are talking about. Getting the acual lyrics is really hard from choral pieces though. There are 2 lines in this which are repeated, and I believe the first one is believe it or not “Decent into Mystery” (it’s either Latin or Italian, but I think it is the former). I can’t make out the second line. Can anyone help with the rest?
Knight (DAMN BOOTLEGGERS!)
P.S. Don’t even say it Ryan hehehe

GuestThis is an age-old question: what are the lyrics in “Descent Into Mystery”.
Unfortunately, .mp3 files do not come with customer support.

GuestNo, I don’t have this on my computer. . .my cousin burnt this on a CD for me, along w/a bunch of other movie scores & stuff. I just assumed it was the main theme or whatever since it’s only like 8 minutes long & the same theme that I know from the movie “Batman” is heard many times. I don’t remember hearing that choral part in the movie, but maybe I need to go back & watch again. Thanks for your help, anyway — just don’t think I rip stuff off the net. :-p

GuestYeah. . .??? I wanted some popular movie themes and stuff like that which I’m interested in on one CD. My cousin is big in to all of that sort of thing, so he burnt me a CD with Danny Elfman, John Williams, etc. cues and other pieces. What’s the problem here??? I didn’t want everyone on this forum hating my guts — I was just looking for some info on something new to me that I’m interested in. . .

GuestElfman mentioned in an interview ( I think online) that the words of “Descent Into Mystery” are made up. I have the article at home somewhere

GuestI read somewhere long ago that they were just variations on the notes of the scale: do re mi fa so la ti do. Listening to the track with this in mind, it sounds to me (the first bit, anyway) like:
mi sa do, fa, re…
mi sa do, fa, do…Thoughts?

GuestYes. I think that is it.

Guestit’s not the “Dies Irea” is it?
April 25, 2003 at 7:49 am #44902Anonymous
GuestYou mean Dies Irae, and no, it’s not. That can acually mean 2 things (that I know of):
1) An acual theme called the “Dies Irae” such as Belioz used in his Symphony Fantastique which was taken from a gregorian chant and was also used in the main titles for a few films.
2) A movement of a Requiem Mass.
As that piece was not using that theme or a requiem mass, it was not the “Dies Irea” as you put it hehehe.
Knight (Now the question is, why did you think it might have been?)

“…just don’t think I rip stuff off the net.”Just out of curiosity…what exactly is the difference between downloading copyrighted material off the internet (which you seem to acknowledge is wrong), and having someone else burn it for you? They seem fundamentally similar, in that in both cases copyrighted material is being copied and distributed without authorization, and the people who own the copyrights are not being paid for their work. I’m not trying to be all hard-ass on you or anything, I just thought it was weird that you seem to think they’re two different things, and wondered why.
