GuestIt’s a nice interview, and reminded me of the day I chatted with Elfman here in Portugal, when he came to the Fantasporto Film Festival in 2000 (I think that interview is still somewhere in the website). Another thrilling feeling about this BBC interview was the chance to listen again to some great old Elfman themes like “Batman”, “Pee Wee” and “Beetlejuice”. I have all those CDs (a lot of them autographed by the man, when I did that interview!), but hadn’t heard those for a while… It was nostalgic. And they still are such powerful themes. Listening to “Batman” I remembered the 1989 evening I went to see the film, and the way I was completely stunned and speechless with that credit sequence.

GuestJust had a revelation. A friend tells me the BBC keep in their archives good pithy details about people and pieces – journalism that can be resurrected and dusted off for new programmes, concert intros etc. It means that errors can reappear year after year, of course, but hey, it saves expensive research. Well in the case of Tommy Pearson’s interview I wasn’t expecting this. Film music isn’t quite a mainstay of Radio 3 programming. However, I’ve just realised that nearly ALL the background info he gives on Elfman comes from the LA Times article of 1999 (funnily enough archived at http://www.bluntinstrument.org.uk/elfman/links/misc_articles/la_times.html – but not for much longer, since the doc will be joining others elsewhere, so sorry if this link only works a week or so). And I don’t just mean the biography – I mean Elfman’s views, his stuffed cat, everything except for the circumstances of the interview (new venue, new film). Just thought I’d share that with you. :o)
