GuestJust wanted to know what people thought of the quote from West Side Story in Spider-Man 2. It recurs throughout the movie, but its most obvious appearance is during the train scene, when Spidey is being passed over the heads of the people in the train car, a la Tony at the end of WSS, and there’s an almost direct quote of “Somewhere”. I thought it was a really cool visual and musical quote. Any other cool ones in there that I missed? (hard to really pay proper attention to the music, the movie was too engrossing

GuestAlso, Tobey McGuire almost didn’t do the movie over back troubles.
It was funny to see that scene where he cradles his back and walks like an old man down an ally going “my back, my back”.

GuestReally funny scene, too bad I didn’t get the “I’m back…..! My back !” joke in the theater…

GuestI don’t know if that’s a qoute so much as that’s Elfman’s “New York Theme”, which is a spin on the main SPIDER-MAN theme.

GuestHmmm…..maybe you’re right, and I’m just predisposed to hear quotes because I’m fascinated when composers do that – sort of like a musical conversation across time. At any rate, *my* ears heard “Somewhere”, well enough that I actually left the theater with that song in my head, strange but true.
I definitely need to listen to more of Elfman’s writing, though….I’m a newcomer to his world.

GuestI was gonna post the exact same thought the other day. I wondered if anyone noticed. It’s not exactly the same but it is very similar. There’s a DCI version (I think it’s the ’94 Cadets) which has a horn solo that sounds exactly like the part on the train.
