GuestUpdate 1: Nomination
Danny Elfman’s BIG FISH was nominated for a Chicago Film Critics Award, but it lost to Howard Shore’s RETURN OF THE KING.

GuestThere have been several nominations for Big Fish score:
2004 61st Golden Globe Best Score
2003 16th Chicago Film Critics Best Original Score
2003 9th Critics’ Choice Best Composer
2003 7th Las Vegas Film Critics Best Score
2003 4th Phoenix Film Critics Best Original ScoreI put the list in my site, http://www.geocities.com/s129002kl/
There’s also an interview with Danny by The Desert Sun, I put the link thereJanuary 22, 2004 at 10:38 pm #47753Anonymous

GuestAfter seeing both films, I have to say that for me ROTK is the best score of the year, but Big Fish is the better film (IMHO) with the second best score. That being said, I think Danny SHOULD get the Oscar for the score, since the ROTK score is the development of the previous two scores (a remarkable work in it’s entirety), and Danny’s work is more appropriate for the “Best ORIGINAL Score for a Motion Picture” category.
As for the other awards that aren’t as specific in their rules, a win for Danny or Howard would be only Justice.

GuestIt’s all so hard to say… I would have to express some disappointment with ROTK (STOP WITH THE SLOW-MOTION DURING IMPORTANT MOMENTS!), although I still liked it.
Side by side, I felt more satisfaction from Big Fish, but would have to chalk that up to taste, and not necessarily artistic unity and perfection.
So who will win what in the days to come? I couldn’t say. Just got back from seeing it the second time, and Big Fish does not seem like the kind of movie the Academy would nominate, even if BAFTA has it on its list.
Of course, if Big Fish is up for Best Picture AND/OR Best Score, I will be having the biggest Oscar party at my house that I have ever hosted.

GuestI just think Elfman should win because Shore’s already won several times, and Elfman’s worked his ass off in an equal fashion and flat out deserves that golden bastard!

GuestI thought that Shore has only won one Oscar?
Guess I was mistaken, how many has he won?

GuestARRRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!! Howard Shore won ANOTHER AWARD! Not only did he beat Danny Elfman in the score category of the Golden Globes, but he nabbed an additional award for best song! “Man of the Hour” was an awesome song, and “Into the West” won! AHHHHHHHHH! And to boot, Howard Shore looked like a total nerd up there. The LORT score was good, but seriously, he’s been writing the same thing over and over for the past 3 years! I want some liberty done for Big Fish! As of now, Big Fish has lost 3 of the 4 nominations, the only one left is best picture. Considering that all major awards shows are totally illegitimate, I’m predicting that Lost in Translation will win where Big Fish should for best Comedy. Prize for me if I’m right!

GuestAwards are over-rated. And I’d stick to that, even if someone I liked won an award.
